Julio Child
Cocinando con
Self-Released
Street: 10.14
Julio Child = Aloe Blacc + UglyDuckling + Little Brother + KanyeWest
The most impressive thing about thisgroup is that both Fisch and EbayJamil write the music. While mostof the album tightly grasps their hiphoporigins, several tracks digressinto acoustic ballads that almostsound like a completely differentgroup. Julio Child may lose theattention of some hardcore hip hopfans, because of this transition ontracks like "A Long Cold Winter," butthey're trying to create somethingoriginal. A couple creative interludestake the listener on a musical trip, while some tracks end with shortsnippets of bonus beats. Ebay andFisch's voices are easily identifiableand they seamlessly blend andbounce verses like Double K andThes One of People Under theStairs. It is obvious that these twohave put loads of time and effortinto their music, which is why I'dcompare the group's sound to 9thWonder. Fisch's loop CDs that hecreates with local producers Finaleand Brisk show just how long he'sbeen at it. Fisch and Ebay have longbeen participating in Salt Lake'smusic scene, but this is the first timethe two have collaborated. B-boysand beat addicts alike will enjoy JulioChild's hip hop roots twisted withfuture-soul sounds. SUPeRB

Laughter
You Hit the Nail on the Head
Self-Released
Street: 10.08
Laughter= BreatherResist+Pantera+Temple of the Dog
Are you ready to taste the rainbow?Laughter has created a sound thatdips where other locals have not. Releasingthe demon of influence, YouHit the Nail on the Head has a variedrock sound. Between the secondtrack "Auditory Ipecac" and track five"I am on my Way," you'll feel the slapfrom a Converge to Pantera soundwith an underlying tribute to grunge. In that jumble, I found a liking fortheir style and promised heaviness. The best feature of Laughter is thatbetween the drumming and vocalsthey manage their screams andsings well. Sudden changeover fromman-imal screaming to melodic singingcan be difficult to slay, but this isa job well done.Nicole Dumas

Navigator
Songs For Mei and Satsuki
Magic Goat Music
Street: 07.22
Navigator = The Future of the Ghost+ Arctic Monkeys + The OliviaTremor Control
This self-recorded album is awonderful little discovery. Althoughits running time is hardly longer thantwenty minutes, the songs are full ofvariation that stretch from extremereverb to quiet acoustics to delicate, tinkling sounds. Upon hearing the first track, I was expecting the albumto be a pretty quiet instrumentalwork throughout. The second trackblasted into my eardrums, thoughwith electric guitar, drums and wobblyvocals. Never judge a book by itscover, and never judge a CD by itsopening track. Braden J McKennais literally a one-man band. Herecorded and performed everythingon the album (with the exceptionsof track seven and nine where hisfifteen-year-old brother plays drumsand the trumpet). McKenna's shiveringvocals are similar to those ofSalt Lake's local music guru, WillSartain. Songs for Mei and Satsukiis brimming with pleasant surprises.Erin Kelleher

Pilot This Plane Down
Glory of the World
Exigent
Street: 08.08
Pilot This Plane Down= Tristeza+Aband whose name starts with an "I"and ends with an "S"
I wanted to get my ears dirty. Insteadof putting Pilot This Plane Downin my computer and doing threedifferent things, I sat down withheadphones. Exigent Records islike a grab bag of goodies and hasreleased albums from many local artiststhat I dig. The initial vibe of Gloryof the World is heavily Isis-influenced,but PTPD have somethingto offer besides a tired replica. Thealbum art is simple and bitchin' andgives the impression that it's lacedwith mysterious meaning. Openingtrack "At Peace" sets the mood andcarries a steady flow to the end with"Collapse." PTPD's songs read likea book, bridging one to the otherand conducting a dark, solemn andambient sound. There are momentsso eerie that it mimics the score ofa 1970s Italian horror flick. With allof the quiet there is loud explodingrhythm that may force you intobanging your head, which is alwaysa plus. Nicole Dumas
