One would be hard-pressed to find morefunctional friends with benefits than fashionand blogging-the constant flow of a widevariety of looks and styles from around theworld are closely monitored and documentedby a tight group of well-known fashion blogs. Both are universally criticized, and allow for theproliferation of terribly misguided creativity. Onthe bright side, these fashion bloggers can befound wandering the streets of Paris, New York,Harajuku, Milan and everywhere in between, documenting the best-dressed. These blogsprovide examples and inspiration for newfashions, unique combinations and upcomingtrends. In addition to providing inspiration forthose of us still trying to put together an outfitfrom what's left of the clean laundry, fashiondesigners can immediately measure the depthof penetration of different looks throughout theworld, with blogs basically providing a 'what'shot and what's not' without all of that peskymarket research.

For those still trying to figure out how to dressthemselves and their loved ones, street fashionblogs highlight the hippest of the hip in everylocale-the who's who of looking or dressinggreat in each locale of interest. Getting multiplefeatures in a high profile blog is a surefire wayto get universal praise and criticism fromfriends and enemies. Depending upon howamazingly creative you think you are, you maybenchmark yourself against any number ofregional or global fashion authorities.

It is unsurprising that the fashion-forwardindividuals among us would be familiar withFruits (Japan), Facehunter (London/world) andPrada and Meatballs (Milan)but what aboutSalt Lake? How does a fashion blog function ina small, landlocked, conservative state wherefashionable is synonymous with last year'small looks from Ross? SLC Pomp, Salt Lake'smost prevalent fashion blog, relies on a clevermix of fashionable youth (i.e. hipsters) and anappreciation for outlandish looks of all types. Inaddition to this lack of preference for a particulartrend, I was surprised by the authenticity andobjectivity of the blog postings. The only biasis towards the interesting and new. The onlyhints of cynicism are firmly layered beneatha seemingly genuine appreciation for lycrabodysuits and elderly women that matcheverything. The more traditional around-townstreet fashion makes a regular appearance,as well as high profile fashion shows anddesign competitions. An appreciation for theart of fashion in all aspects is most definitelymold-breaking, and some of the highlights ofthe blog are often found in the pictures andcommentary of the most eclectic of personsrather than the prettiest.
