Through the Eyes of Carrion:
Kyle Brown - Guitar,Vocals, Lyrics
Josh Lauscher – Drums
Cam Nash – Bass
I constantly try to get a handle on the majority of local metal bands, scenesand styles. The fact that I come across bands I haven’t heard of all the time is atestament to the massive number of bands in Utah. I had no idea that Throughthe Eyes of Carrion has been around for roughly a decade.
Kyle Brown, founding member of the band, has kept things going throughthe typical line-up turmoil. DrummerJosh Lauscher joined a few yearsago, but exact dates weren’t exactlyremembered.
The newest member, Cam Nash, joined roughly a year ago. "Friendskept telling me about Kyle, this longhaired, flip flop-wearing, banjo-pickingmetal-head, and they all compared meto him, even though he’s far superiorto me musically," says Nash, who alsoplays bass in Cave of Roses. Nash willbe taking double duty for this month’sLocalized show.
The band started as black metal andhas evolved throughout the years into what the guys called "bladerthrash."Roughly one-and-a-half years ago, the band released their debut full lengthThe Passing through Blackmetal.com, a mail-order website that doubles as anindependent label. The band states that the best way to experience their currentsound is to see them live. TTEOC are hard at work in the studio, and have plansto release a new record in March.
"It’snotblack metal,it’s not deathmetal and it’s not thrash. It doesn’t really fit a genre, sowe’re not adhering to anyone’s scene. It’s kind of a dark death metal with doom,"Brown says.
"It’s psychedelic metal, that’s what I’d call it. Stuff that when you listen to it you’dwant to pop a Xanax and drink a couple beers," says Nash.Brown describes the crowd’s attempts to mosh to the band’s music as "likeplaying red light green light with a retard."
"We definitely try to stray from the black metal scene. The music is good, butthere is a lot of repetitiveness in it. The whole Satan, God sort of thing andcorpse paint is overplayed and a joke," Lauscher says.
The lyrical direction of the band isclear, though. Brown is inspired bymisanthropy and the aspects of societyand humanity, that he despises.
They don’t like to be stuck with a certainlabel tag or scene association. Nashjokes and describes the band as "flipflopmetal," and says that they "highlyendorse smoking marijuana."
Brown says, "We kind of take an antisocialdirection in [our live show] too.We don’t tend to say too much to thecrowd. We’re more or less there to playour music and let the audience enjoy itfor themselves."
Dare to come see the current creative process of metal scene veterans Throughthe Eyes of Carrion and Cave of Roses with A Horrible Night to Have A Curse atThe Cell Block on Nov. 14. A $5 cover gets you in.

on a second read of the interview, i just wanted to say this. the interview is misleading.. in that the band didn't start out as a 3 piece. it started out as a 5 piece with drz on guitar, and joe on vocals. curtis (ex-drummer) was kicked out because he didn't want to start incorporating blast beats. joe left for reasons i either don't recall, or don't know, and rhett started doing vocals. so that put it down to a three piece in it's 3rd stage. years later i joined the band, so 4th stage is a 4 piece. FYI. :D
