Kim Gordon, co-founder of the post-punk band Sonic Youth, has written a remarkable memoir that is both as humbly conversational as it is candid about some of the more sensitive issues surrounding her remarkable life. Girl In A Band takes readers through Gordon’s early family life in California, the art scene of late ’70s and ’80s New York City, the Sonic Youth years, knowing Kurt Cobain, all the intricacies that go with the life of a rock n’ roll mother, and through the beginning and end of her marriage to Sonic Youth co-founder Thurston Moore.
Gordon is refreshingly unapologetic in narrating these experiences and is not weighed down in faux curtsies to those she discusses in her memoir, such as Cobain, Courtney Love, Madonna, Lana Del Rey or her former husband. However, while she delivers a stunning honesty in her narration, she is also fair regarding her descriptions of those that she encounters.
This book is a must read for fans of Sonic Youth, and it is especially important for those who appreciate a unique female narrative of life in the music and art industry. Be sure to pick this one up. –Nick Kuzmack
