[Still from No Ashes, No Phoenix]
No Ashes, No Phoenix
Slamdance Film Festival
Director: Jens Pfeifer
Directed and screenwritten by Jens Pfeifer, No Ashes, No Phoenix follows the Phoenix Hagen, a basketball team in Hagen, Germany, as they fight to maintain their newcomer status in Germany’s 1st league. Knowing that they’ll be booted back down to the 2nd league without a few wins, Phoenix Hagen’s head coach, Ingo Freyer, signs on another American player–Michael Jordan. No, not that Michael Jordan, Michael-Hakim Jordan, a professional basketball player from Philadelphia. The Phoenix Hagen begin to win here and there, but Jordan’s ego might be more than this little team can handle. By focusing more on the team’s situation and players than on the actual games being played, Pfeifer creates a documentary that even those who don’t give a shit about sports can enjoy. No Ashes, No Phoenix won the Grand Jury Sparky Award for Feature Documentary at Slamdance.
