Lycus = Asunder + The Wounded Kings + Weakling

It’s clear that Lycus know and understand their influences rather well, combining an atonal USBM riffing style with long sections of legitimately heavy and atmospheric funeral doom. Tempest shows this band’s style is varied and interesting enough to justify their long tracks. As intemperate and moody as the album’s namesake, Lycus fluctuates between different styles and musical ideas in a way that demonstrates not only a creative melodic sense, but a deliberate experimentation with the form that feels genuine. Even if you’re not a fan of the genre, you may nevertheless find yourself caught up in the Tempest, engaged and interested the whole way through. –Henry Glasheen
