The Brian Jonestown Massacre at Urban 06.14.10

The Brian Jonestown Massacre at Urban 06.14.10

What do you expect on a Monday night in Salt Lake City?  Often times, not much.  But June 14th, 2010 was a day of rejoice.  The Brian Jonestown Massacre stopped in Salt Lake City to grace local music lovers with their one-off brand of neo-psych rock that seemed to be enjoyed by all.  With the pre-show line extending over a block down 500 East, I knew it was going to be a good time.  When I finally walked through the doors, opening act Elephant Stone had alread begun to warm up the crowd.  Playing what can be described as ambient, yet deep, experimental rock I knew that the mood would be right once The Brian Jonestown Massacre took the stage.  If you don’t know, The Brian Jonestown Massacre was started in 1990 and has a discography that now contains 12 LPs and 5 EPs.  In other words, what the hell were they going to play?  Well, 2 hours later I had my answer. Crowd favorites such as Nevertheless, Anemone, and That Girl Suicide had the fans, including myself, dancing and singing along. Often times I wonder if a band that had been around for 20 years really enjoy performing as they used to?  This question was also answered during the show, percussionist Joel Gion opened the show with a few claps and his tambourine, and continued to push the rhythms and energy throughout the show, while also making sure to mention how much they enjoyed playing the show in SLC.  Touring may be tough, but when a crowd such as the one that showed up on Monday night is there to support you, how can you not enjoy it? … read more

The Devil Whale, Allred, The Fictionists and Ask For The Future at Kilby Court 06.11.10

The Devil Whale, Allred, The Fictionists and Ask For The...

On Friday June 11th, Kilby Court hosted The Devil Whale’s release for their latest EP, Young Wives. The lineup also included three other local groups:  The Fictionists, Ask For The Future and Allred.  The skies were wet and the temperature was lower than expected but all that seemed not as important as the music. With an age range in attendance varying from toddler to what some may consider ‘grown up’, you can’t help but recognize that both the musicians and attendees were there for the same reason, to take in a positive night of musical prowess without the worry of spilling your drink and then having to buy new one. Zumiez Couch Tour 2010

Zumiez Couch Tour 2010

Zumiez may be an overpriced wannabe skateshop specializing in selling the latest flashy clothing trends to young victims of too much inbreeding, but when the annual Zumiez Couch Tour comes around, I’ll overlook those aspects due to the admittance of a professional skate team demo, two band performances, an Am contest open to locals, Chipotle tacos and chips, energy drink giveaways. Did I mention all this is FREE?!
This year the Lakai team was scheduled to make an appearance in the Murray Fashion Place Mall where the entire event was hosted. The team included heavy hitting skate legends such as Mike Carroll, Cairo Foster, Guy Mariano, Rick Howard, Vincent Alvarez and Brandon Biebel. Among this list of professional thrashers, Lakai am Daniel Espinoza was there tearing it up like it was the Maloof Money Cup finals. Mike Mo Capaldi was there, but due to an ininjury, he skipped out on skating the course and went straight to sign autographs after the demo. Photos: Eric Poole … read more

Desert Rocks 2010

Desert Rocks 2010

Deep in the heart of the desert there is a place where anything and everything goes…well everything but bad vibes. This particular place is known as Desert Rocks. No I am not talking about the actual rocks that sit in the desolate landscape, but an actual rocking out jam session featuring bands from all over the states in one huge musical extravaganza. People migrate to Moab, Utah and come together to lie in the dirt and listen to the sweet, sweet music projected from the dusty speakers. I arrived on Friday evening to find plenty of drunks, burners and any drug I could think of at my fingertips. I was finally home. The music line up consisted of so many bands I would feel bad if I only mentioned one because I would have to mention them all. People you had never met before were like brothers and sisters as the nights blended into mornings. The Sol Lun, a solar powered stage and bar, was always quite a spot to be at, containing hammocks of every size and height, whiskey shots and a piano to boot. Many minutes between shows were spent there playing the piano hopped up on something or another. Desert Rocks takes the cake for an outside concert series where the bands, spectators and everyone else actually live together for the whole event. See you all next year.

Salty Flea Market 6/7/10

Locally made knick knacks, clothing items, and edible goods were bought and traded here at the annual Salty Flea Market.  The vendors were down to earth and eager to show off their products, while many people attending were equally excited to buy said products.  Shopping wasnt the only thing going on during the event, there were also local bands performing and a half pipe sesh in the back.  … read more

2010 WILD IN THE PARK STOP#1
Volcom’s 2010 North American Wild in the Parks Tour was kicked off in style at American Fork’s own Greenwood Skatepark on Saturday, May 8th. With 200 competitors shredding the park for a chance at invites to this year’s $25,000 WITP Championships in Arizona. Needless to say, it was a ruthless battle consisting of everything from a kickflip back tail shove out to tre-flip boardslides. The skill level of the skaters was off the charts and gave everyone more than enough to think about on their way home at the end of the day! Photos: Gage Thompson

The Skaficionados CD Release Party 05.07.10

The Skaficionados CD Release Party 05.07.10

The Skaficianados celebrated their newest CD release and future tour plans by headlining a show with fellow ska and punk bands on 05.07.10 at Kilby Court.  Among the local bands skanking alongside the Skaficianados were 2 1/2 White Guys, Storming Stages & Stereos, Love Astronauts, and In Key Drop Outs.  The crowd seemed to enjoy every performance from actions of acceptance ranging from shouts of encouragement, to full on monkey-hump the red pole in the middle of the pit.  Emotions were higher for some because it was the last show for the In Key Drop Outs, but that didn’t stop anyone from throwing a few fists and moshing during their entire set.  Photos by Eric Poole. … read more

Johnny’s on Second Anniversary Party

Johnny’s on Second Anniversary Party

Johnny’s on Second had an Anniversary party on Saturday May 8th and it was quite a turnout. Everyone came out early to have a good time and listen to some great music from Oh! Wild Birds. Mike Phillips and Mike Touw were slinging beers and shots making sure everyone had a happy buzz and a smile on their face. There is no excuse to be bored at Johnny’s with 3 pool tables, a shuffleboard, a stage for bands, plenty of tv’s and plenty of booze. If Johnny’s on Second isn’t a regular hang out, you should think twice about where you spend your time. Photos by Mitch Allen … read more
