Wasatch Roller Derby Picnic Scrimmage featuring teams and leagues from all over the state. Photo: O'Durgy
As I walked into the Derby Depot last Saturday afternoon, I was stoked to see all of the different skaters from around the valley, warming up on the track. A little bit of everyone from all the teams and leagues, including Uinta Madness, Wasatch, Red Rockettes, Salt City, Happy Valley and even the girls from Moab. For some, BBQ and fishnets may be an odd combination, but for the true fans and family of these derby skaters, it is pure bliss.
Besides the mandatory black or white shirt to signify the teams, as far as uniforms went, rainbow was the general color scheme of the day. Tights, stockings and shorts, waist to toe, the skaters were decked out. The set up for the game was four, 30-minute scrimmages, two female and two co-ed. Throughout the entirety of all of the bouts, one thing was certain: with this many different skaters from different teams and leagues, there was no real moment of synchronicity. It was pure chaos out on the track. Although there were moments of synchronized game play, for the most part, it was all the jammers could do to break out of the pack and get around for their scoring run.
Once the men joined in the game, it blossomed from chaotic, to ruthless. Hits flying left and right, so many penalty calls, especially for cutting track, it was all I could do to even remember who was in the penalty box and when! The action did not stay on the track, some of the refs were getting a bit over-excited as well. The one and only Plug McKraken was moving too fast, following the skaters in the scrimmages, and nearly took me out as he crashed and slid along the trackside floor. They put warnings up around the trackside for a reason.
At the end of all the bouts, it was a shut-out over team black. Team white won all of the matches, though the black team gave them a definite run for their money.
