Gavin SheehanOffice Coordinator gavin [at] @slugmag [dot] com |
Gavin Sheehan started off working as a "gopher" for a local radio station at the age of 17. He has spent over eleven years in local broadcasting, officially becoming employed in 2000 as a late-night weekend DJ on a now defunct rock station that no one remembers. He moved to the "alternative" radio station Channel 105.7 in 2001, where he learned what not to do in radio. In 2002 he made the transition to television, working for the then UPN station Z24, where he moved up from being an MCO to a producer, editor and occasional voice talent. In 2004 he was hired at to KUTV - CBS/2News as an MCO, where he sat in purgatory for over six years. During that time he started the blog "Gavin's Underground" on their website in Jaunary 2008, covering the local entertainment scene. After winning a City Weekly "Best of Utah" award for his efforts, the blog moved to their website in June 2009, where it has remained ever since. Sheehan joined SLUG Magazine in May 2011 as the office coordinator, and producer of the SLUG podcast Soundwaves Of The Underground.
Hometown
Salt Lake City, UT
When and why did you come to Salt Lake?
Born in Logan, raised around the state, ended up here in my early teens with my family. Did I really come to SLC, or just not escape before it got in my veins?
When did you start reading SLUG?
Sixth grade, roughly. I recall the articles after Cobain's suicide bashing the media circus and laughed my ass off. Sold ever since.
When and how did you become involved with SLUG?
I interviewed Angela Brown for a blog entry when it first started, and kept a friendship with the magazine and the staff ever since. SLUG took me in when I suddenly found myself unemployed.
Favorite SLUG feature?
Of recent memory… Dave Chisholm's interview about his comic book "Let's Go To Utah," where he also took over the cover.
Favorite SLUG Story (something that has happened in your life)?
I drink a lot, does drinking at various breweries from the Beer Issues count? Fuck it, I'm counting it.
Favorite place to see live music in Salt Lake:
Anywhere that keeps tickets under $20.
Favorite restaurant/bar in Salt Lake:
Ichiban
Current obsessions, musical or otherwise:
Digging most local music (except that which sucks). Can't seem to stop listening to Joy Division, Nirvana, NIN, Pink Floyd, Florence & The Machine and other random favorites.
What was the first show you attended?
Mike Watt with Foo Fighters, fall of 1995 at DV8. Don't tell but Jeff the doorman let us in underage. Oh wait, it burned down, so fuck it!
What was the first record you bought?
With my own cash? Tool's Ænema
.
What was the best event you ever attended?
2009 New Year's Eve at Burt's Tiki Lounge with Top Dead Celebrity and Thunderfist. God's Revolver bailed on the show, four fights broke out because of two assholes from Tooele, and a shaving cream war broke out at the end.
Who would you most like to meet from a SLUG cover?
Henry Rollins. I get the impression that he'd make a dart game over foreign food more interesting than that sounds.
