Jeanette D. Moses

Managing Editor

Jeanette D. Moses started at SLUG Magazine in 2005 while still in high school as an office intern and CD reviewer. She fought her way to the top, eventually landing a position as SLUG’s Managing Editor in Feb. 2009. Moses graduated with a B.A. in Communication from Westminster College in May 2010. Over the years, Moses has packed SLUG’s pages with a variety of interviews spanning from national musicians, local business owners, home brewing crust punks and local bands. Some of her recent favorite pieces that she has penned for the mag include features on Pangea Speed, The Black Angels, Spell Talk and Black Lips. In addition to her work at SLUG, Moses occasionally works as a freelancer for Time.com covering Utah politics and news crazy enough for non-Utahns to care about.

Hometown
Born in Southern California. Lived a few different places but raised primarily in Salt Lake City.
When and why did you come to Salt Lake?
My parents moved to Salt Lake City from the Bay Area
when I was 10.
When did you start reading SLUG?

Around 13 or 14 hanging out at Crossroads Mall in downtown SLC.
When and how did you become involved with SLUG?

I started as an office intern and CD reviewer when I was 17. I spent one day a week of my senior year of high school coming downtown to intern in the office.
Favorite SLUG feature?
Does it make me an asshole that some of my favorite features are the ones that I write? Probably. Truthfully, my favorite feature changes from month to month depending on the content of the mag. To quote Ian Saint Pé of Black Lips, “That’d be like picking a favorite child. How can I pick? They’re all special. They’re all my children!”
Favorite SLUG Story (something that has happened in your life)?

Going to Austin for SXSW 2011 was amazing. I got to see almost all of my favorite bands and artists in a five-day period. It was an inspiring experience that revitalized my love for writing about music.
Favorite place to see live music in Salt Lake:

Urban Lounge, W Lounge, The Garage or Jackalope for the rare, but intimate rock n’ roll shows that they host.
Favorite restaurant/bar in Salt Lake:

I am incapable of picking one. My top favorite restaurants have to be Takashi, Eva, Sushi Groove, Evergreen, Brewvies, Stoneground, The Garage and Meditrina. I could live off sushi and I consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur of mac and cheese. My favorite bars are Jackalope, The Garage, W Lounge, Urban, Brewvies and Juniors. My guilty pleasures are Bar X and Beerhive.
Current obsessions, musical or otherwise:

Food- and drink-wise: sushi, mac and cheese, any gin drink that has been muddled with cucumbers, making my own pizza.
Music- Black Lips, Cerebral Ballzy, Tea Cozies, The Black Angels, Bass Drum of Death, The Kills, The Black Keys, The Ravonettes, Generationals … etc.
Other- Local news shocking enough to grab the attention of national media, snowboarding, live music, cameras, SXSW.
What was the first show you attended?

It’s hard to say what was the absolute first. My dad worked in radio when I was young so I was always getting taken to random shows that he had tickets to. The first show that I remember really wanting to go to was when I was 11. My dad and stepmom took me to see Snoop Dog, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kid Rock, Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers. They were all playing together for the opening of EMP in Seattle, Washington.
I’d see Snoop again…
What was the first record you bought?
The first record that I purchased was the Blatz/Filth Shit Split. Next I purchased a record player so I could actually listen to the thing.
What was the best event you ever attended?

SXSW tops the list, but Sundance and Slamdance Film Festivals come in close second. Gay Pride is always an awesome time, as are the SLUG Games Snowboard Series in winter.
Who would you most like to meet from a SLUG cover?
The friendly raccoon from November 2010 or the drummer from that one band that graced the cover of August 2010 … oh wait …
