Asoso: Resting Collectively, Rising Collectively Art Installation
August 12 @ 7:00 PM - 10:00 PMFree
Asoso: Resting Collectively, Rising Collectively is an art installation showcasing photography, film, and art by youth, children, and members of the Utah Oceania community. The installation will be housed in a construction modeled after a Oceania home to recreate the sacred space and power of its people.
Asoso originates from the Chuuk expression “our rest” shared by Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Micronesian-Oceania steward, Paul O’toko. Asoso is a recipient of the Harvard Oceania Collections Engagement Fellowship 2021 awarded by the Harvard University Peabody Museum, University of Utah School for Social Transformation and Change, Utah Museum of Fine Arts. Afā ‘Aikona, Tongan artist, activist, and founding member of Asoso further explains the purpose of the fellowship. It is a,“collective effort of Oceania in the diaspora and our ancestors. We hope Asoso will encourage talanoa (sharing stories) about resting, mental health, and wellness.”
We invite all to the art opening at the 25th Annual Friendly Islands Tongan Festival hosted by the National Tongan American Society, August 12, 2022 at Jordan Park located at 1060 S. 900 W. Salt Lake City, Utah 84104 AT 7PM. This is a free admission event and all are welcomed to come rest collectively for us to rise collectively.
