About the Artist
Leekyung Kang is originally from South Korea, and she currently works at Idaho State University as an Assistant Professor in Department of Art. Kang’s work is about creating the illusion of dimensions by capturing the unseen architecture space between the second and third dimensions through traditional installations and digital mediums. Influenced by her formal training as painter, Kang’s work focuses on pictorial elements, usually in the architectural context with a linear perspective, with the gradual transformation of three-dimensional forms that challenge the perception of space. Kang has participated in several residencies in the US , Middle East and South Korea and her work has been exhibited in the US, South.Korea, and Doha, Qatar.
I have navigated the structural framework and “bone/skeleton” of infrastructure in the urban landscape since 2014. By exploring the surface of spatiality such as construction sites and scaffolding structure, I have leveraged architectural imagery with mixed media. I am seeking to uncover the unseen space, which is present, but never fully revealed. I would like to capture this unfinished state and challenge the conventional understanding of space, which tends to focus on its physical condition, history, and transformation.
This exhibition is made possible through the support of Sugar Space Foundation and ZAP Zoo, Arts and Parks Program.
