Getting Up
Slamdance Film Festival
Director: Caskey Ebeling

Slamdance alumnus Caskey Ebeling’s Getting Up documents the artistic rehabilitation of Los Angeles graffiti legend, social activist and publisher Tempt One. After being rendered almost completely paralyzed by ALS, aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in 2003, Tempt was left bedridden and practically unable to communicate, let alone make art. Throughout the span of several years, Mick Ebeling orchestrates a collaboration between the international collective of hackers and artists known as the Graffiti Research Lab and Tempt’s friends and fellow graffiti artists (including Angst and EyeOne). The group is determined to achieve the impossible: let Tempt write again. The result is the EyeWriter, a low-cost, DIY eye-tracking drawing device that works with open-source software they developed themselves. This lets Tempt transcend his physical limitations and once again become a driving force in the graffiti community and the rest of the world. Getting Up is a story of love, hope and triumph—a cinematically beautiful and truly inspiring film. 5 of 5 stars.
