Poinciana Sunrise (World Premiere)

Slamdance Film Festival

Director:  Chuck Gomez

The Highwaymen is an organization of landscape artists from South Florida formerly classified as “motel-art artists.” The recently redeemed artists now command thousands of dollars per piece. The film focuses on the only female member of the organization M.A. Carroll, sometimes known as “The Queen of the Road.” As the price of her paintings increased her desire to give back to the community through preaching did as well. The film follows that arc of her life from beginning painter to current icon of a re-emerging art movement.

First-time director Chuck Gomez did a great job gaining access to this Floridian legend and bringing her struggle to life. The amazing, exotic landscapes begin connecting more with the audience as the private life of this queen of The Highwaymen comes into focus.
