Free Comic Book Day: Dr. Volts

Utah comic book and television writer, Jake Black

For those of you headed out to Utah comic book stores this Saturday for free comic book day, consider making one special trip to Dr. Volts for a worthy cause. One of the biggest local comic book writers we have in Utah is Jake Black. Black’s name might not immediately ring a bell, but his work certainly will. He's had a hand in writing works for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Supergirl, Smallville and Ender's Game to name a few. In addition to this, he has had television credits within the DC and Warner Bros. catalog, most prominently on a couple episodes of the highly acclaimed “Batman: The Brave & The Bold” on Cartoon Network. He's become a respected figurehead to local comic book creators, and one of the most loveable guys in that circle of creative minds.

What many don't know is that Jake has battled and survived a bout with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. A lengthy battle at that has left the writer stacked with bills for treatment, medication and more. Anyone who's had a family member or friend stricken with any form of cancer knows the emotional and physical pain alone can be draining, and the financial pains that come from our health care system after the fact can be just as devastating. Local comic store Dr. Volts is looking to help Black out.

This Saturday, along with giving away the free comics, the store will be holding an all day raffle for prizes, with all the proceeds going toward helping out Black and his family through this time of need. As an added bonus to the day's events, Kat Martin will be on hand to display and sell her creepy art, 7-11 has teamed up with the store for a “Create Your Own Hammer,” contest where the winner will receive a Thor prize pack, local Tough Enough contestant and UCW wrestler Martin Casaus will be on hand for a meet and greet and the store will have an overall sale where items will be going for up to 50% off.
