Teenage Bottlerocket = Me First and the Gimme Gimmes + Nerf Herder
Bottlerocket has made a name for themselves by doing what most bands at Fat Wreck do—taking the comedic route. Though the songs from American Deutsch Bag don’t match up to classics like “Radio” or “Headbanger,” they hold up as typical Bottlerocket songs. On “Ich bin Ausländer und Spreche Nicht Gut Deutsch,” they uphold their pop punk style by saying one line throughout the whole song—only this time it’s in German. They then cut to the fast-paced, 60-second, pro-pot track, “I’m the One Smoking Marijuana Motherfucker,” with lyrics emphasizing their juvenile-delinquent mentality. The EP closes with a cover of Tony Sly’s “Via Munich,” giving ode to the punk rocker that passed away in 2012. I liked the EP all right. It has the band’s comical sensibility and their typical sound. It’s not Teenage Bottlerocket at their best, but it is them at their standard. –Eric U. Norris
