Forget everything you know about the female vocalist that fronted legendary punk band X. Well … almost everything. On Saturday night at the Red Eyed Fly, Bloodshot Record’s punk-singer-turned-country-singer, Exene Cervenka, took the stage. Before the show even started it was clear that the majority of the crowd was there because they loved X. Conversations about the merits of albums like Los Angeles, Under the Big Black Sun and More Fun in the New World swirled throughout the crowd before Exene took the stage.

Although the style of music Exene is performing these days is a far cry from her work with X, Auntie Christ or even Exene Cervenka and the Original Sinners—the punk rock swagger remains in her unforgettable stage presence. Her newest project finds her playing an acoustic guitar and singing raw country songs about lost loves, regrettable decisions and dealing with the consequences of both. Although the style of music has changed considerably her song writing is still as captivating as ever.
