Free World Music Documentary Screening at Salt Lake City Public Library

A Tree With Roots Music presents four short films exploring global musical traditions, with a Q&A with the filmmaker to follow

A Tree With Roots Music, a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to celebrating the world’s musical cultures, will host a free public screening of four short music documentaries on Tuesday, May 26, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Salt Lake City Public Library, located at 210 E 400 South. Admission is free and no tickets or reservations are required.

The evening will feature four films spanning four corners of the globe: “A Celebration of Parang: The Sounds of Trinidad & Tobago” (30 min), which documents the beloved Venezuelan-influenced folk music of the Caribbean; “Grand Mamou: The Cajun Sounds of Louisiana” (22 min), a portrait of the living Cajun music tradition in the American South; “Born in Nepal: Traditions in Nepalese Music” (13 min), exploring the rich ceremonial and folk music heritage of the Himalayas; and “Trip Report: Music of the Solomon Islands” (32 min), a rare look at the indigenous musical cultures of the Pacific.

A Q&A session with the filmmaker will follow the screenings, moderated by local ethnomusicologist Andrew Murphy, founder of A Tree With Roots Music. Attendees will have a unique opportunity to learn about the stories behind the films and the communities they document.
