Lemon Twigs = Revolver-era Beatles + Pet Sound-era Beach Boys + The Monkees
The Lemon Twigs new album Look For Your Mind! hits once again at the sweet spot when rock-n-roll was still young and innocent. The Lemon Twigs have mastered the sound of Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys with the psychedelic, experimental joy of The Beatles Revolver and the upbeat, infectious sunshine pop of The Monkees. The Lemon Twigs have chosen the perfect lane to stay in: bright, catchy, pop rock with driving hooks, lush harmonies and clear, playful, well crafted song structure. Every song on this record is a two joint high mixed with candy sprinkles and ice cream.
I wasn’t sure SLUG was going to let me review another Lemon Twig record: I think this is my third crack at the band. This is most likely my last chance to convince SLUG readers of the brilliance of the brothers Brian and Michael D’Addario. I want to say first that The Lemon Twigs are not a novelty act dragging nostalgia out into the open just to show off. They are not trying to make something old new again. They definitely are not giving a wink and a nod to the Boomer Generation who, I might add, no longer really buy music in any format. Brian and Michael D’Addario are playing this music for themselves and that is the magic of this record. It comes from the heart. Anytime anything has authenticity like that, it means it comes from a great fucking place.
The opening title track jingles and jangles like early Byrds as breezy as a summer breeze at the beach. Even when the Twigs sing about longing: “Look for your mind / it’s hard to find / Something must have taken it away / Yeah, you’re a dog who’s had his day.” It still sounds like the perfect afternoon under a Southern California sun. “When all the choirboys have gone / And the Trojan horses linger on / How will you know just where you’re going to? / And in the greenest field you’ll find out where you are.” Pure pop bliss.
“She’s lived two or three as many lives as me.” The D’Addario brothers harmonize on the standout track 2 or 3. It’s a song of the summer. Try your hardest to get this song out of your head. “We visit old cafes / And read from ancient scrolls / But these enlightened days / Have begun to take its toll.” It may be a downer line, but damn! These songs make you feel good. Make you tap your foot. Tracks like: “Nothing But You“, “Gather Round“, “I just can’t get over losing you” and the ELO fueled rocker “Bring You Down” are all straight up rock-n-roll burners from a time before all the hippies came around.
The Lemon Twigs are no longer rocks best kept secret. After 6 studio albums the D’Addario brothers have established themselves as legends in the music scene. Both recently showed up on Todd Rundgren, Thundercat and Weyes Blood records. And Brian D’Addario released his debut solo album “Till Morning” that came out March of 2025. They have also got their rock opera out of their system in 2018 with their musical album Go To School about a monkey that goes to college.
Brian and Michael D’Addario are the musical geniuses we need right now. “Look For Your Mind!” It is 100% amazing. It’s just as delicious in 2026 as it all sounded in 1966. Let The Lemon Twigs razzle and dazzle you. Let The Lemon Twigs live in your head for a bit. They will take you to a happier place. —Russ Holsten
