seventh sense by floatinground has a large roster of collaborators, including Ether Warburton (vocalist and guitarist), Jon Abegglen (guitarist), Westley Renner (lead producer, drummer), Alek Burden (bassist) and finally, Steven Jagoda, the recording engineer. When the first song of the album started, the guitarist was playing a darker mood of chords. The song gave me a sad, drained feeling that the artist clearly expresses. The first line of the album was: “I’m just a tangent riding tandem, shoelaces tangled in the chain,” which gave me the impression that there was a one-sided relationship going on. Throughout the song, I learned that it’s about a famous individual who was in the music industry. I was instantly intrigued to learn more about this album’s story.

As the album goes on, the mysterious person is revealed to be a boy. “Seventh Sense” tells the tale of floatinground and this boy’s tumultuous relationship. Throughout the song, it’s revealed that floatinground’s gut is telling them he is wrong for them. Their seventh sense — intuition — is ignored. They only feel full of happiness when they’re sitting with him, but they know he “places his tables with knives,” metaphorically speaking.

The relationship feels unbalanced. I think the artist feels a deep sense of loyalty to their memories and bond with this person, but their brain knows what happened was wrong. I started to learn from the third song of the album, “Small Talk,” that he is promising riches, such as fake offerings, stay-away vacations, hot tubs with hotels and planning Valentine’s Day in December. Later on, we learn in “Small Talk” that exploitation was taking place, and floatinground was feeling monetized to sell themselves in some way.

During the song “Love Without Bombs,” we learn that they desire to not be around someone who wants to use them for fame, wealth or social climbing. They don’t want to be replaced by a new “babe,” as quoted from the album. His shadow keeps following them home, and they can’t help but wish things could be different, but the author is determined to show this person that they will never keep them feeling empty forever, and that they are going to show him that what he took could never be their spark, or their passions. I couldn’t help but think about how handcrafted the story of this album was. My lover and I will definitely be waiting to listen for more of the future floatinground albums. —Morgan Hillam
