Nocturnal Nook Novelties: Utah’s First Horror-Based Bookstore
Book
If you’re a book lover, you know that Utah’s literature scene is a steadily blooming space for romance, sci-fi and fantasy bookstores that can be found as far as the freeway stretches – but what about our beloved slasher fans? What of those who wish to sweat through pages in sickening anticipation of shock and horror? It may sound unlikely, but if you’ve been looking for a spooky storefront dedicated to splatter-punk and all things supernatural, look no further – there’s a new bookstore in town just for you!
Situated along Lehi’s historic main street, you’ll stumble upon Nocturnal Nook Novelties – Utah’s very first bookstore dedicated to readers with a knack for all things thrilling. Whether you’re on the hunt for your next heart-stopping read, a new tarot deck or a fun knickknack from your favorite horror media, there’s truly something exciting for everyone on the shelves of Nocturnal Nook. If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, you can even take up a blind date with a mystery book!
While perusing their spectacular selection, I had the opportunity to speak with Michelle Mooney, the woman who’s made it all possible. What began as mentions of a mobile book-stop eventually blossomed into a home for the most macabre of Utah’s bibliophiles, and it’s no mere miracle. As a mother and first-time business owner, Mooney shares that the journey to opening the doors of Nocturnal Nook has been nothing short of a dream come true, despite the endless trials she’s faced in an effort to unite lovers of mysteries and monsters right here in the Land of the Mormons.
Mooney shares that she grew up with a deep love for reading, from The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry & the Big Hungry Bear to titles like Goosebumps and The Bailey School Kids. This love of literature was paired with a preference for movies like Arachnophobia, Poltergeist and Scream, films full of slashers and the supernatural. Beyond a lifelong love for literature and thrillers, Mooney states that there is nothing more important to her than establishing a trusting community – so much so that your price tag typically matches what Mooney paid for the products you see on her shelves. In this economy, it’s pertinent to support stores that are focused on giving back. Even when she’s given more than what she’s received, Mooney knows that consistency in community is key, and it seems that her integrity is truly paying off.
Though operating with limited space, Mooney hasn’t let that stop her from making waves in Lehi’s main street community. Aside from craft carts, sidewalk sales and a community bulletin board, Mooney is collaborating with the vintage shop Faire Day in preparation for her first official event, the Stitch Witch Market! Stroll down Lehi’s main street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10th for the free market to meet a few mystical makers and local authors. With over 16 vendors, crafty creators and countless books in the nook, you’re bound to find something spellbinding for the whole family.
Mooney’s efforts are especially esteemed in the era of an impending literacy crisis. It goes without saying that it’s never been more crucial to read and challenge our communities to expand our collective knowledge. During our conversation, we discussed how horror is an extremely stigmatized genre – one that many avoid for reasons they may not fully understand. Despite this stigma, Mooney believes horror has been one of the most introspective, expanding genres she’s encountered, speaking to some of society’s largest issues, often through a perspective that readers have never experienced firsthand. If you’re ready to embark into the reeling realm of horror, Mooney encourages readers to start with authors like Grady Hendrix, who specializes in social commentary and satirical thrillers, before delving deeper into the grim galore of the horror genre.
Additionally, this may be Mooney’s love for the community rubbing off on me, but while you’re in the area, you should also stop by Sinners & Saints Coffee Co. for a good cup of joe while you’re blazing through your new bewitching reads! Now I’m far over my word count, so I simply beg that you take the trip to Utah County and explore our very first horror-based bookstore!
