Now Hiring: Junior Editor
SLUG Magazine is looking for a full-time Junior Editor to support the voice and execution of one of Utah’s most influential independent publications. Based in our Salt Lake City office, this in-person role plays a key leadership function in guiding editorial workflow, supporting writers and copy editors and ensuring each issue reflects SLUG’s commitment to music, arts, events and community. Job Title: Junior Editor
Department: Editorial
Reports to: Executive Editor
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a robust volunteer team of writers, photographers, designers and illustrators
- Edit, copy edit and fact check content for online and print publication
- Research and curate suites of content for the monthly print issue of SLUG Magazine
- Post and oversee posting of online content on SLUGMag.com
- Work with Associate Editor to oversee Editorial and Social Media Interns
- Work with Associate Editor to lead copy editing meetings on Wednesday evenings
- Process publicist emails, press releases, music promos and more
- Assist in operational duties as an Associate Producer of the SLUG Soundwaves podcast
- Assist other departments in editing and drafting marketing copy
- Represent SLUG Magazine at local events and actively reach out to the community
- Coordinate branded content and sponsored social media posts
- Plan and lead team meetings across all departments of SLUG Magazine
- Adhere to the code of journalism ethics as set by the Society of Professional Journalists
- Balance SLUG Magazine’s editorial standards with expected publishing schedules
Qualifications
- SLUG Magazine reader with a strong understanding of SLUG‘s brand
- Passion for and familiarity with Utah’s music and arts scenes and local businesses
- Actively seeks to support local businesses and attends events, concerts, etc.
- Team leader with experience managing other team members
- Able to work under pressure to meet quick deadlines
- Keen knowledge of all genres of underground music and interest in local art
- Experience with posting and scheduling on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter/X
- Able to maintain SLUG Magazine’s core values of quality and transparency
- Experienced, published writer with impeccable grammar and copy editing skills
- Keen knowledge of AP Style guidelines
- Working knowledge of WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, SEO, GA4
- Must be available to work occasional nights and weekends
