This Easter Sunday (April 5th, 2026 at 12:00 PM) step away from the bustle of the holiday and into an afternoon of sublime music as soprano Natalia Turchin presents her Doctorate of Musical Arts recital. Natalia is a student of Professor Julie Wright-Costa, and she is joined by the extraordinarily gifted collaborative pianist Dr. Mitchell Giambalvo. Together, they invite you to experience a program that celebrates memory, spring’s rebirth, and the timeless power of voice and poetry.

The recital opens with Let the Florid Music Praise—a trumpet-like tune and fanfare of the Baroque era from Benjamin Britten’s On This Island—an invitation to leave the outside world behind and surrender to the enchantment of sound. From there, we journey through Dominick Argento’s beloved Six Elizabethan Songs, where the ecstatic Spring awakens the senses with images of birdsong and blossoming nature, and the hypnotic Hymn casts a spell with its shimmering, moonlit repetitions—“Goddess excellently bright”.

At the heart of the program lies Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915, a work that captures the hazy, sacred quality of childhood memory. Barber set the prose of James Agee, who also gives us the important key:

“We are talking now of summer evenings in Knoxville Tennessee in the time that I lived there so successfully disguised to myself as a child.”
These words speak to the way we remember the places that shaped us—the ordinary evenings that seemed eternal, the family members whose presence formed our earliest sense of safety and self. In Barber’s lush orchestration (adapted for piano by the composer himself), the music becomes a portrait of innocence, nostalgia, and the wonder of looking back.

Whether you are celebrating Easter with family or simply seeking a moment of beauty, this recital offers a space for reflection and connection. Bring your loved ones, and share in an afternoon that honors memory, springtime, and the art of song.

We look forward to welcoming you to Dumke Recital Hall.
