Altered States in the Acid West Opening Reception

Altered States in the Acid West Opening Reception
Join us for the opening of Altered States in the Acid West, a major group exhibition bringing together twenty-three contemporary artists who reconsider the stories, symbols, and cinematic language that have shaped ideas of the American West. Drawing inspiration from the “acid western,” the exhibition explores how frontier imagery can be distorted, reframed, or undone—treating the West not as a settled narrative but as unstable, dreamlike terrain shaped by myth, belief, and competing histories.
The reception will also mark the opening of Love and Squalor, featuring the institutional premiere of the new single-channel video work Sunday Without Love by Ragnar Kjartansson. Set in a pastoral landscape and performed on repeat, the work pairs idyllic imagery with a fragile chorus that introduces themes of longing, resignation, and quiet endurance—hallmarks of Kjartansson’s practice.
Also opening are new exhibitions by Sara Serratos and Jude Agboada, UMOCA’s current Artists-in-Residence. Plus, Gonzalo Silva & Susana Silva: Instrumentos de silencio.
Special performance by Chaz Prymek.
