El Topo: Film Screening

84 84 people viewed this event.

As part of the public programming for Altered States in the Acid West, this screening of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s cult Western El Topo brings the genre’s familiar landscapes into a hallucinatory register. Part allegory, part spiritual quest, the film follows a black-clad gunslinger through cycles of violence, enlightenment, and rebirth, unsettling the myths of conquest, masculinity, and moral clarity that have long shaped representations of the American West.

Blending mysticism, surreal imagery, and ritualized confrontation, El Topo mirrors the exhibition’s interest in altered perception and the West as a site where ideology, spirituality, and spectacle collide. The desert becomes not a backdrop but an active psychological terrain—one that bends narrative logic and resists stable meaning.
