Events

Everyone worships differently on Easter Sunday. Some go to church and listen to a sermon, and some listen to blooming beats and drink some hoppy beer out in the sun. The 16th Annual Bunny Hop hosted by New City Movement at T.F. Brewing featured a fierce selection of floppy-eared DJs mixing colorful samples like easter eggs for the dance floor to catch, with plenty of yummy grub and booze to keep the vibe alive.

I arrive and check in around noon, while the line grows and the bubbling anticipation builds inside the brewery. The buzzing event draws colorful rabbits from all over the valley. The line wraps around the block, and the event picks up fast as packs, pairs and rogue rabbits file onto the dance floor. T.F. Brewing boasts multiple bunny dens, including the indoor bars and DJ and an outdoor dance floor and DJ, along with a lot for all the classic and new food trucks, including World’s Best Corndogs and Tonkotsu Handrolls (my personal favorite).

The vinyl-only DJ set presented by New City Movement was particularly impressive, boasting a talented and diverse rotation of DJs. Each DJ transported the crowd to a new time and place. Their focus, skill and electric performances drew in the crowd for an unconventional, all-inclusive Easter service. Their love for their craft and the event shone. Maru brought immediate beachside Spanish dance fever to the outdoor Bunny Hop stage, while Rockin Robin transported us back to a sweet ‘50s diner dream on the inside “Honey Bop” stage.

There certainly seemed to be a strong feeling of peace, acceptance and unapologetic joy found amongst so many different types on the indoor and outdoor dance floors. The spirit is fueled by sunshine, music, community and an array of delicious craft beer, wine and cider. The bartenders clearly look forward to this shift, energetically serving customers like friends and proudly wearing their interpretation of disco Easter bunny diva.

The crowd was sparkled with Easter magic and genuine inclusivity and kindness; I was involuntarily pulled in to dance many times. This event seems to attract genuinely caring people each year, as it is clear part of the pure happiness in the crowd comes from a philanthropic place. Proceeds from the event support Promise Utah this year, an organization committed to removing barriers to education and access to basic needs so Utah families can thrive. Also, a portion of the proceeds from T.F. Brewing will benefit Salt Lake Animal Services this year.

At the Bunny Hop, there is an element of found family and embraced eccentricity, a rare and unique Easter egg you can rediscover year after year at T.F. Brewing, always hosted by SLUG Magazine & New City Movement.
