Starfucker at Peckerheads

Nothing is better than watching a band thoroughly enjoy themselves on stage. Such was the case with Starfucker when they performed a short, mid-day set in a tiny space at SXSW on Wednesday.

The last time I saw this group, I was overwhelmingly unimpressed. I’ve always dug their recorded material, but found their live performance to be totally lackluster. They looked bored to be on stage, bored of their music and even worse, bored of the crowd. Luckily, this time around I witnessed a band with extreme energy and enthusiasm for what they were doing. Their energy bounced off of each other and quickly infested the crowd.

The majority of their set list came from their newest album, Reptilians, but “Boy Toy” from their Jupiter EP definitely was played with the highest amount of energy. This song found the group thrashing around the stage and lead singer Joshua Hodges screaming the lyrics at the top of his lungs.

Although the performance was short, it was powerful and blew my previous experiences with the group totally out of the water. Thank God for this second impression.
