For the 38th year of the SLC Twilight Concert Series, an elegant arrangement of folk, country and Americana populated downtown Salt Lake City. Local talent Sammy Brue opened with a great solo acoustic set consisting of originals and covers alike, featuring some Justin Townsville tracks. Next, Kaitlin Butts began her show with a full bluegrass band and a lyrical sandwich on the song “Roadrunner” that I’d compare to something like “End of the World” by REM. Great track after track, Butts moved the crowd with a great rendition of “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World along with a great cover of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” by Lead Belly.

Headliner Sierra Ferrell brought a fantastical, flowery, safari-inspired show. Between some great covers and a cameo appearance from Post Malone for a duet on the song “Never Love You Again,” Ferrell’s set elevated the crowd at Library Square into an unforgettable night. Doing a whopping five covers by artists like Dolly Parton, Gordon Lightfoot, Kris Kristofferson and more, she had something for every fan of roots music. That’s not to say, however, the show was all one-note.

To call Ferrell the top of her class would probably be an understatement; Ferrell managed to take home four Grammys this year across the Americana subcategory. Moving from genre to genre, Ferrell even forays into jazz and bossa nova with her fantastic track “Why’d Ya Do It.” Rounding out the night with her encore, Ferrell left the audience with a great performance of fan-favorite track “In Dreams.” Despite the bogging and neverending heat, the city came alive if just for some great music. Between fantastic local talent to relative titans of the genre, the SLC Twilight Concert Series represents the absolute best of what the Salt Lake City music community can offer.
