The art scene and its inhabitants have been a large influence on local DJ and graphic designer Jesse Walker’s style. “The scene and its people have taught me how to take risks, a few tricks and that you can’t take yourself so fucking seriously, most of all,” he says. Jesse (aka “Mr.” Jesse Walker) prefers not to try and force any particular look, but, rather, to absorb it and let it flow naturally, creating an organic, simple style that is his own.
Every month, SLUG Style features a distinct and unique member of the community and asks them why they do what they do. Exploring more than just clothing, SLUG Style is an attempt to feature the people who give Salt Lake City flavor through personality and panache.

For say, a backyard BBQ in the summer, Jesse adopts what he calls his “bowler chic” look. Going sockless with cuffed chinos and a button down makes for a comfortable outfit, but still gives him the ability to add a surprising splash of color and pattern every once and a while. He says, “I like to have people think they know me and then throw them off.”
One of Jesse’s favorite pieces is a secondhand suit that he found at Decades. Originally outfitted with bell-bottoms, it fit so well that he couldn’t pass up the tempting piece of blue velvet menswear, so he had it altered to fit perfectly and hasn’t let it slip out of his possession since.
When Jesse decides he needs a little more than a rubber band to carry items with him, he prefers to keep it simple and utilitarian. Having a medium sized, bag in simple, neutral colors means that he can match it with whatever he wears that day, and that it won’t be too much of a burden to pack around.

An integral part of Jesse’s day-to-day presence is his use of cologne. He samples many different blends and brands, mixing them to create his own intoxicating fragrances.
“The less I can have on me, the better,” Jesse says, opting for a rubber band to keep his cards and ID together, rather than a full-size wallet or checkbook, as it ensures that his pockets are clear and free of clutter.
A pair of fine dress shoes, easy to dress up or down, are an essential piece of Jesse Walker’s wardrobe. “I like to have a few staple pieces, and then build my daily outfits off of those.”
Expertly tailored suits always have an effect on people. “Married housewives come up to me when I’m wearing this and tell me ‘I want to take you home,’ but I have to refuse them!” Jesse told SLUG with a smile on his face.
