Skullcandy Crusher Cup @ Kilby Block Party 6

Action Sports

The rain tried to ruin the weekend at Kilby Block Party, but it didn’t stop the incredible skating at the Skullcandy Crusher Cup.

The first day of the Crusher Cup was a local qualifying event. There were skaters as young as 13 and as old as 30 in the qualifying heat. These skaters were doing their hardest tricks, trying to impress the judges to make it into the next two days of the contest for the local team. They battled in jam sessions of four teams with four members per round, totaling 12 skaters. The skaters that stood out were Dane Vaughn, Jake Taylor and Shiloh Sweat. The most notable tricks of that round wereSweat’s switch heelflip down the three block and Vaughn’s back overcrook grind on the gap to rail. The two that advanced were Vaughn and Box.

The teams consisted of four participants per team with five teams. Team one was Team Nora Vasconcellos with Vasconcellos, Ryan Townley, Jake Yanko and Daniel Vargas. Second was Team Andrew Reynolds with Reynolds, Tom Schaar, Pedro Delfino and Justin “Figgy” Figerora. Team three was team Nikolai Piombo. It consisted of Piombo, Jamie Foy, Oski Rosenberg and Gustavo Robiero. Next was team Jake Anderson with Anderson, Ronnie Sandoval, Gus Gordan and Tyler Pacheco aka “Manchild.” Team five was team John Shanahan with Shanahan, Matt Anderson, Jake Baldini and James Juckett. Lastly, team Tyson Bowerbank consisted of Bowerbank, Alec Majarus, Dane Vaughn and Wes Box.

Saturday was the park finals. Teams battled in the bowl of the skatepark in a head-to-head competition. The standout trick was from Delfino, who did a massive frontside air, pleasing the crowd. Sandoval was the crowd favorite with a beautiful frontside invert on the extension that made the crowd go crazy.

Sunday the rain came in early, so the street contest started a little later than planned — but it didn’t stop the crowd from showing up. The sun finally showed up and the teams came out ready to skate. Reynolds ended up being the all-around skater of the contest, catching a kickflip over a three block. The team that won the overall contest was Team Nikolai Piambo. Ribiero got technical with a 360 flip noseblunt on the down rail but in the final minutes of the contest, Foy won the best trick, with a massive heelflip over the pyramid — looking like Liu Kang from Mortal Kombat — and the crowd went nuts! The Crusher Cup was a complete success, and everyone had a great time.
