I’d never played a single game in the Devil May Cry series. I just thought it is something worth noting going in. With that in mind, I’m reviewing this game completely on its own merit. This HD remake of the critically acclaimed gothic hack-and-slasher from Capcom is profoundly Japanese. Stunningly drawn, over-the-top, cutscene-packed and, at times, confusing as hell, Devil May Cry delivered exactly what I expected when I first fired it up. Beyond all of that, it will hook you in for hours at a time with its smooth controls and addicting gameplay. It’s in the combat combinations and learning your favorite way to rack up high scores that makes this game a fucking riot. I may even go so far as calling it a masterpiece in pure, unadulterated gaming fun—even if I’m not completely sure what it’s about. I’m not a big believer in all of these remakes, but DMC4 was a completely new experience for me, one I enjoyed immensely. –Blake Leszczynski
