Interpol to Play Classic Tracks and New Material at Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre

In the late 1990s, a handful of bands filtered the sound of post-punk England into something familiar yet occasionally strikingly new. Music historians will inevitably debate the details, but Interpol will always make my shortlist of the defining acts that not only renewed interest in a sound born from the collapse of punk rock, but also survived the genre’s resurgence and inevitable decline as the fickle gaze of trend and fashion drifted elsewhere.

Touring in advance of the August 28, release of This Mirror Weighs a Ton, their eighth studio album, Interpol has embarked on an ambitious 23-date North American tour before heading to Europe and the UK for a run of arena shows with Bloc Party.

Once indie darlings, Interpol have become elder statesmen, a band whose influence will almost certainly be felt in whatever the next iteration of post-punk becomes. For some bands, that legacy becomes an unbearable weight that stifles creativity.

I’ve yet to hear the new album in full, but the early indications are promising. “See Out Loud” is a stomper, the soundtrack to late-night club melancholia. Even more compelling is the dreamy, almost hallucinatory drift of the title track. “Iron City” is more direct in its construction, yet still retains the band’s signature haunted atmosphere, anchored by a throbbing bass groove. It’s hardly a radical departure, but it finds somewhere new to go — a remarkable achievement for a band approaching its 30th anniversary.

Come for the classics and leave won over by the new material? That sounds like a very real possibility. Interpol performs at Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre on August 4, 2026. Tickets are available at redbuttegarden.org/concerts.
