Local folkie Nick Neihart hits a range of acoustic touchstones, employing his falsetto artfully on “Free as a Chain,” but also sounding just at home in the rougher, rootsy “Somewhat of a Loser.” Neihart has a mature aesthetic and capable songwriting, but for an album with few trappings other than his guitar and voice, there are few moments, either melodically or lyrically, that show the kind of compelling originality that would break him onto the national stage.
