a place i go by static wild is a small but mighty album. I listened to a place i go for the first time while riding the train. The mountains flashing by outside of the window grew a little more majestic, and the grass just past the tracks seemed a little greener. The album’s trippy, synth atmosphere is perfect for easy listening. I’ve played a place i go a few times while working, traveling and studying. a place i go always makes my time a little more magical. It’s a psychedelic indie album that pulls you gently along on its journey.

The only aspect of the album that I find hard to immerse myself in is the first few bars. a place i go starts with quiet tracks that slowly layer into the first and titular piece, “a place i go.” A guitar begins the song by strumming timid chords in a tempo that feels fragile. The first few measures of the album sound like static wild is stepping hesitantly onto a tightrope. Past the initial wobbly steps (only a few bars), a place i go really finds its stride. The end of “a place i go” is fitted with a fantastic drop that assures you the album will be a great adventure. 

There are different highlights for different types of listeners. “delusion” is for those who like a bit more rock. “search party” is for the more experimental listeners. My favorite piece has to be “i don’t believe you,” a lyricless psychedelic jam. Creative buzzes, whirs, clicks and other digitized sounds blare around your ears in a maelstrom of sound. The end result is hard to describe. It almost feels like driving through a tunnel with the car windows rolled down. Sounds blitz past you with a gloriously chaotic echo. You just have to settle back for the ride.

The lyrics of the entire EP are often highly filtered through various staticky effects. When present, they’re simple and synthesized — made for listening rather than understanding. It took me a few close listens to fully parse out the words. The story that the lyrics are telling matches wonderfully with the wandersome and trippy feel of the album. The lyrics discuss the place that we all go when life gets to be too much. The album speaks of traveling far from the noise to be in peaceful solitude. However, the narrator of the album takes a dark turn along this solitary path — if “search party” is any clue. 

static wild perfectly captures the feeling of the place that you find yourself returning to time and time again. However, a place i go is trippy and delightfully dark in addition to being reminiscent. a place i go is all in all a promising debut album. —Avery Good
