With her third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, Olivia Rodrigo has not only proven that she can deliver elite pop records, she has proven that she is a generational talent. you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love is a concept album that traces the full arc of a young and doomed relationship. It’s a record about the rush and crush of love — from the overwhelming, intense warmth and safety of falling into it to the drastic, dramatic, explosive train wreck when it all falls away. All you have left is the rubble and the remnants of all the things that will only hurt you the most.

Rodrigo employs the melancholic synth sounds of New Order, with the dark, cotton candy euphoric dread of The Cure when Robert Smith chooses to lean a bit into pop. Rodrigo also injects the robotic beats of Gary Numan with the glossy precision and heavy hooks of The Cars while at the same time not ignoring the pop punk spark of Avril Lavigne and the “It’s Brittney, Bitch” Britney Spears confidence. These are some of the building blocks that Olivia Rodrigo uses to build a masterpiece. 

On the track “u + me = <3” Rodrigo sings: “They say modern love is a cruel endeavor (They say it’s cruel) / And to that I say, “Fuck It, whatever (Whatever).” This sums up the first quarter of the record. Rodrigo wants the moment to last forever, “You know all the words to ‘Just Like Heaven’ / And I know why he wrote them now that you’re standing right here.” Robert Smith is in the bloodstream on this entire record. Smith duets with Rodrigo on the gorgeous track, “what’s wrong with me.”

“New York City’s never looked so blue / My friends smoking blunts in the bathroom,” Rodrigo sings on the track “stupid song,” a flawless pop anthem that starts as a soft piano ballad and elevates into a type of song Ric Ocasek laid out for The Cars’ Heartbeat City record. This song contains some of the greatest lyrics written about love in the 21st century.: “You’re a spark in the dark and my clothes all caught aflame / You should feel how I feel when somebody says your name.” Olivia Rodrigo is in deep, singing “Car speeding down the boulevard without a brake / And I want you more than any stupid stupid song could ever say.”

Rodrigo continues this momentum on the tracks “honeybee,” “my way” and “purple.” She doesn’t let up — “Somehow it’s the weekend, I’m still bored out of my skull / And I went to a party but only on principle.” Rodrigo harmonizes on the stellar “maggots for brains.” It’s the tipping point when everything starts to unravel: “I feel dirty, I feel rotten, and the colors are all flat / I’m a sad shell of a woman and I’ve got maggots for brains.” Yes! Olivia Rodrigo fucking wrote that. She’s dropping bombs like she’s Bob Dylan.

The track “the cure” begins with a guitar that sounds like the intro to a Smashing Pumpkins song. “I got toxins in my bloodstream, you tried hard to suck ’em out” — the relationship is cooked. “But it don’t matter how your love feels anymore / it’ll never be the cure,” Rodrigo sings. On the track “begged,” a soft Fleetwood Mac type confessional, she continues, “I’m an anchor in the ocean / You know I could never leave.” Rodrigo is building up walls to protect herself. 

The record ends with “cigarette smoke” and Rodrigo sitting around in all the ashes: “Some nights can be so fucking lonely / But it’s better than begging you to stand up for me, honeybee.” Rodrigo laments, “Ooh, mm, the memories go dark / The memories go dark.”

This is a perfect pop record. It never lets up. you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love is Olivia Rodrigo’s version of Bob Dylan’s Blood On The Tracks — it’s that good! It will wreck you in so many perfect and beautiful ways. —Russ Holsten
