This Will Destroy You – Extended Interview

Perhaps it’s blasphemy, but Texas-based This Will Destroy You are what I imagine god would sound like if he were real and in an instrumental rock quartet. Their name may be just as pretentious as that statement, but once you hear any of the powerful tracks off their upcoming album Tunnel Blanket, to be released May 10 on Suicide Squeeze, it’s clear This Will Destroy You are not feigning ambition. Read on for an extended version of the interview with drummer Alex Bhore running the May 2011 issue of SLUG. … read more

Starfucker @ Urban Lounge 04.19

I am so glad this band returned to their original name.  The Portland dance pop squad initially altered their moniker because of the media attention they were receiving from the funloving but thorny “Starfucker” to the somewhat bland “Pyramid.”  Apparently you just don’t feature a band called Starfucker in a TV commercial. With the release of their second LP (after a slew of EPs), Reptilians, the original name is back, although they will also tour as the more marquis friendly “STRFKR.”  I think the original fits them.  … read more

Now, in case you’ve never seen them—or heard them, for that matter—Mogwai play a blistering mish-mash of rock, shoegaze, metal, indie, and trance-inducing drone. … read more

A-Trak @ Complex 05.10

Alain Macklovich a.k.a. A-Trak has been a busy man. One month ago, he left Coachella after playing a wild set with Duck Sauce mate Armand Van Helden and met up with Kid Sister and the Gaslamp Killer to kick off the Magic 8 Ball Tour. Serving partially as a pretext for A-Trak’s most current stage design, the tour spanned south from coast to coast twice, ending up in Salt Lake City last Tuesday. … read more

Dredg @ Avalon 05.10

A touring bill featuring this lineup likely would’ve been an impressive show, had the bumbling Avalon not fucked up yet another sweet setup with poorly trained and incompetent staff. The night ended with no encore and a sluggish herding to the parking lot, as well as a reminder that Salt Lake City’s inability to properly showcase medium-size acts is a true blight on its musical reputation. … read more
