Review: Senses Fail – Renacer

Posted on May 7, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Opening with the heaviest song in their career, notably without a single scrap of clean singing, Renacer is the album I’ve secretly been waiting for since the first time I heard Buddy Nielsen scream at the end of “One Eight Seven.” … read more

Review: Scott And Charlene’s Wedding

Posted on May 29, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

As if a debut album of numbingly good lo-fi fuzz and blues wasn’t enough Craig Dermody is back with an outstanding EP. With less fuzz, and rhythms more poppy than before, Dermody belts out more tales about injuries, love and sadness. … read more

Review: Sharks – Selfhood

Posted on June 6, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

There is a certain blissfulness that comes with simple music. UK-based Sharks’ latest release, Selfhood, is a record that reminds me of a simpler time in music. … read more

Review: Shannon And The Clams – Dreams In The Rat House

Posted on June 28, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

When Sleep Talk came out two years ago, it managed to blend forced nostalgia with something fresh. … read more

Review: Secret Policeman’s Ball – Teenage Crimewave

Posted on July 2, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Don’t let the shoegazer cover fool you—this is not your traditional indie-rock record.  … read more

Review: Sankt Otten – Messias Maschine

Posted on July 31, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

If you couldn’t tell from the band’s name, album title or album cover, this band is German. Waaay German. … read more

Review: Saprogenic – Expanding Towards Collapsed Lungs

Posted on July 31, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Review: Scraper – Self Titled EP

Posted on July 31, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

The heavy chainsaw guitars—emitting chord changes at a rate The Ramones might approve of—caught my attention last. … read more

Review: Shitfucker – Suck Cocks In Hell

Posted on October 2, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

All the profanities and vulgarities aside, and belligerent and unabashed as Shitfucker’s tunes are, they’re not quite as vulgar as the eye-catching band name and vulgar album title suggest.  … read more

Review: Seams – Quarters

Posted on October 30, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Quarters utilizes crisp, unadorned beats that snap and pop in crystal-clear hi fidelity. These simple chord progressions and beats are then added on layer by layer with buzzing synths and serrated arpeggios until the sum eventually outweighs its parts, but not without leaving a golden thread back to the beginning. … read more

Review: Seeker – Unloved

Posted on October 30, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Knee-jerk reaction would lump these guys in with the somehow-still-prevalent deathcore genre, but Unloved lacks the breakdowns and the tech-noodling. What they do play is ferocious, syncopated rhythms where guitars serve as another percussive instrument, punctuated by slow interludes of open strumming. … read more

Review: Said The Whale – hawaiii

Posted on December 4, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Hawaiii is an album that sounds exactly like what you’d expect radio-friendly indie rock to sound like. This means that it’s just as likely that a preteen girl will play their music as it is that your mom will.  … read more
