Andre Hoggan Studios: DIY Festival Artisans

It’s that time of the year again! The Utah State Fairpark opens its gates to the 18th Annual Craft Lake City DIY Festival Presented By Harmons. Being Utah’s largest local-centric arts, music, science and technology festival, DIY Fest is a three-day event. Experience the best of our state’s creative culture with over 500 local artists and makers, three stages for music and dance performances, a youth entrepreneur area, a STEM building with hands-on exhibitions, dozens of food vendors and more. Andre Hoggan has crafted mixed-material art pieces by blending handmade paper, metalworking and woven fabrics into breathtaking pieces of art. While most artists begin their works on a canvas, Hoggan takes a different approach and crafts his own paper by hand. He gathers dried yucca plants and collects used denim jeans or coffee bags for later processing. Hoggan shreds and blends the material into a watery pulp, then each piece of paper is sifted through a frame, dried and pressed into the pieces that he offers at his booth.

While the process is laborious, Hoggan takes great pride in both the labor and final outcome. Raised on an Idaho farm, he became familiar with hard work at an early age. His passion for art developed during his time at Idaho State University, where Hoggan was deeply inspired by a passionate teacher.

Hoggan offers paper-making classes open to anyone excited for a new challenge. Students learn about each step of the process and walk away with their own handcrafted paper. While preparing for his classes, Hoggan crafts the very material that shapes his captivating artwork. His finished pieces are beautiful abstract expressions that encourage intimate exploration by the viewer.
