Local Reviews: Written in Fire

Posted on April 16, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

I’ve never felt any personal opposition to the recent thrash revival some of us metal fans have been noticing. Written in Fire are not purely a thrash band, but the influences are heavy in every way and I find myself enjoying them quite a bit. … read more

Local Reviews: Exer Ovu

Posted on April 9, 2013 (July 21, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Exer Ovu, the acoustic music project of Derek Griffith, uniquely combines the energy of acoustic punk with the flamboyance of freak folk.  Griffith has an expressive voice that he uses mostly to good effect, notably on opener “You’re Making Me Nervous,” a minute-long blast of hoarse four-chord punk.   … read more

Local Reviews: The .bLARE”

Posted on April 16, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Every unpaid music critic dreams of writing a critical review of a band’s early release that prompts them to make prescribed changes and then go on to great glory. I know this is a mirage, but still …The .bLARE”, let’s chat. Like any first time director, you have a great first act, but have no clue how to follow that up. … read more

Local Reviews: Citizen Fate

Posted on April 16, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Local CDs are always a mixed bag.  95 percent of the time they suck, and once in a while they 100 percent suck.  Unfortunately for my ears, Citizen Fate fell immediately into the latter category.  … read more

Local Reviews: The Fully Blown

Posted on April 16, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

How do I relate to you the greatness found on this record? In complicated words I could say, The Fully Blown is a heavy hard rock band with post-punk influences and lightly dusted with hardcore inflections, with touches of psychedelic guitar work. Simply put, they fucking rock. … read more

Local Reviews: Joseph (The Voluptuary) Smith

Posted on April 9, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

The most striking thing about this record, straight off the bat, is that the all-black plastic CD case has a small castle (temple?) adorned with a sparkly mushroom placed on the middle of the cover—that’s three-dimensionally, sticking out about three inches!  … read more

Local Reviews: Various Artists

Posted on April 9, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

The first release from Utah Heavy Guitar Rock Records is a free compilation with Volume 2 already at its heels. The aptly-titled comp of 10 artists is a stark eye-opener, showcasing some serious guitar chops as well as strong songwriting abilities. … read more

Local Reviews: The Lionelle

Posted on April 9, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Musically, The Lionelle could easily exist as a simple vehicle for Tate Law’s strange but drop-dead affecting voice. Law’s vocals, if you haven’t heard them, sound like a mix between a collapsed-lung Tim Kasher and an emotionally attached Johnny Whitney. … read more

Publik Spans the City

Posted on December 1, 2016 (August 5, 2022) by Asha Pruitt
Missy Greis stands in front of Publik Kitchen

As I sat at the new Publik Kitchen in the 9th and 9th area, eating an amazing, syrup-drenched, mocha French toast, I could feel this presence of motion—of ideas, as much as utensils, putting feet to the pavement. … read more

Movie Review: Moana

Posted on December 1, 2016 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

The animation in Moana is gorgeous and represents the tropical region flawlessly, but what makes this adventure stand out above the rest is the music. … read more
