Local Review: Desert Empire – Like Home

Posted on October 30, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

After seven interminable years of anticipation and a recent name change (originally Velvet City), Desert Empire have released a heavily progressive first album that veritably blew me away. Intricate, rolling drum patterns, matched with a mix of soft and sonorous upper–register piano riffs create an aquatic theme like a deep–ocean odyssey. … read more

Local Review: Dethrone the Sovereign – Autocracy Dismantled

Posted on October 30, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

This local prog-metal outfit is one to watch out for. They display maturity in every inch of their presentation, from songwriting and recording/producing to oft-neglected areas such as packaging and art direction. … read more

Local Review: Decibel Trust – Self-Titled

Posted on December 31, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

After I listened to this, I put on old-school They Might be Giants. Why? One, because they’re fuckin’ rad, and two, because Decibel Trust sound like what you’d get if you heard John Flansburgh singing New Found Glory songs at a karaoke bar. … read more

Local Review: Desert Noises – 27 Ways

Posted on March 6, 2014 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

The “folk rock by way of Roky Erikson” sound concocted by Desert Noises isn’t anything new, but the standout track on the album, “Elephant’s Bed,” is an ominous and tuneful track that blisters at the end into a Neil Young–esque guitar solo—like something out of Rust Never Sleeps. … read more
