KRCL Hidden Hollow Concert Series – 9/3/10

On Friday September 3rd, Hidden Hollow was once again the venue for KRCL and Utah Open Land’s Hidden Hollow Concert series.  This edition featured an opening performance by Rakatanka, which was followed by a spirited showing from La Farsa.  Rakatanka greeted the smaller than usual crowd with a nice mellow vibe that was influenced by light percussion, lots of group interaction, and a harmonica for good measure.  La Farsa picked things up with upbeat pop-esque songs and lots of crowd interaction. With fall in the air and fast fading daylight, get out to the final edition of the Hidden Hollow Concert series on September 17th.  … read more

KRCL Hidden Hollow Concert Series 8/20/10

On August 20th, Libbie Linton and Fictionist provided the entertainment for the fourth edition of KRCL and Utah Open Lands’ Hidden Hollow Concert series.  Linton, who hails from Logan, performed a well received and easily listenable set that showcased her unique voice and her personal take on a combination of mellow rock and classic folk music.  With members from Fictionist jumping in and out of various songs, Linton was able to demonstrate her emotional song writing when performing solo, and the enjoyabilty of more upbeat songs when backed by Fictionist members.
The group Fictionist was the second performance of the night.  Fictionist plays what can be described as rock with a little bit of pop and indie influences thrown in for good measure.  With two guitars, a bass, a keyboard, and a percussionist, Fictionist is able to alter the mood of their show from song to song.  One song can emphasize their vocals, while the next can be full on rock that gets both the crowd and the energy level picked up.
Friday night saw the biggest turnout so far at the Hidden Hollow Concert series.  With only two more concerts left, make sure to get out to Hidden Hollow on September 3rd to enjoy some free local music in an intimate setting before it’s too late. … read more

Craft Lake City 2010

Craft Lake City 2010

SLUG’s 2nd annual Craft Lake City took place at the Gallivan Center on August 14th, 2010.  With over 100 artists on hand, the event filled both the upper and lower sections of the Gallivan Center.  Live music from locally loved bands and djs such as The Red Bennies, Spell Talk, and Muscle Hawk kept the crowd entertained if they needed a break from browsing, while local b-boy and hip hop dance crews took the spotlight when the main stage was being set up for the next performance.

The attendees were procuring goods that included prints, jewelry, hand made clothing and accessories, longboards, and vintage photo equipment.  The quality and thought put into the products was visible both when examing items and when discussing them with their sellers.  The range of creativity and interest that was displayed at Craft Lake City gave attendees the opportunity to find anything and everything that could be of interest to those who prefer hand-made to overproduced.

Craft Lake City provides an outlet for artists and goods-makers to get their names out to the masses while also providing a physical link between these artists and the customer.  Both the artists and the SLC community showed that there is a growing population whom prefer this physical conection rather than the distinctly lacking connection of big brands and small thought.  Well done SLC. … read more

KRCL Hidden Hollow Concert Series – 8/6/10

KRCL Hidden Hollow Concert Series – 8/6/10

On a rainy and cooler than usual Friday night at Hidden Hollow, Desert Noises and A.M. Bump put on two great performances sponsored by KRCL and Utah Open Lands.  Desert Noises hail from Happy Valley, otherwise known as the Provo/Orem area just south of Salt Lake City.  The three member group, which is made up of Kyle Henderson, Tyler Osmond, and Trever Henderson takes their inspiration from all that daily life has to offer. Desert Noises provides their listeners with emotional, enjoyable music that seems to easily relate to whatever is captivating the audience’s mind.  The performance showcased Desert Noises thoughtful songwriting and their musical capabilties with songs varying from slow, provoking listens to uptempo rock.  Desert Noises plays frequently throughout the Salt Lake and Provo/Orem areas, so if you’re looking for some good local music, check them out.
A.M. Bump is a Salt Lake City soul jazz trio that plays covers of classic 60’s and 70’s soul jazz along with more modern renditions of popular artists such as the Greyboy All-Stars and one of my favorites, Medeski, Martin, and Wood.  Consisting of Marty Lyman on guitar, Chris Snarr on percussion, and Jeremy Abernathy on a classic organ, A.M. Bump kept the crowd thoroughly entertained, even as the skies began to darken and the rain was fading in and out.  If you have some time on Friday, August 20th, make sure to come check out the next redndition of KRCL and Utah Open Land’s Hidden Hollow Concert Series.

Brick & Mortar Shop Opening

Brick & Mortar Shop Opening

Salt Lake’s variety of weather change is pretty vast, like snow in April, or rain in July, it makes skateboarding a little harder to do constantly.  Brick and Mortar Skate Shop opened its doors on Saturday July 31st in a space located on 200 S 561 W, next to In The Venue and across the Old Town Trax stop.  Hondo, the twenty three year old store owner, stumbled on some cash and decided to invest it while he could.  His idea was that it was hard to find a shop solely dedicated to skateboarding, to be set apart from the snowboard/skateboard hybrid stores.  The shop has an awesome selection of decks, a great location, cheap rent, a couch and open space inside to relax. Did i mention a HUGE open flatground area in the back?  Currently occupied by a tanning bed, Hondo  has plans to have a mini ramp in there by winter so he can keep the shop thriving through the stagnant winter season.  Oh and the flatground area isn’t just choppy concrete, its slick and pretty, enough to land those sketchy 360’s on.  Check out the shop if you need clothing, skate shit or ..friendship.  … read more
