Welcome to the wedding reception playlist of your dreams, except it’s all one band’s music, and that band is Tomper. “Wedding reception” music is what SLC-based musical married duo Tom and Piper Petersen try to embody, says Tom. Of the underground pop genre, their sound is a bit “janky” and a little “jazz,” and sort of “everything BUT the kitchen sink.” Or perhaps more evocatively, Tom describes them as a “crappy Earth, Wind, and Fire, with some indie rock splashed in there.” Besides 1980 and earlier hits, you’ll perhaps hear the essence of Mac DeMarco, and maybe even some Michael Jackson too, but really, at the end of the day, the duo are just trying to make songs that entertain people; songs that are of the wedding reception, universal variety, one could say.
