Napalm Flesh: March of Brutality & Pentagrammation

As another weekend approaches, the level of metalness in SLC will grow exponentially from last weekend’s local metal gigs and the Summer Slaughter Tour. Meat Shits, Exodus and Enthroned are all set to hit the city this weekend—be prepared. … read more

Andre Williams with The Goldstars, The Rubes and DJ Dirty...

Seeing an aging musician can be a gamble. I can’t count the number of times I’ve coughed up cash to see some geriatric legend to find myself bored out of my mind watching some drunk, washed-up mess. Luckily Andre Williams is not one of these musicians—he isn’t even close to it. On Monday night the 74-year old Black Godfather took the stage to a severely under packed crowd.

The Mediocre Show

The Mediocre Show
By

Created in the suburbs of Philadelphia during the early days of podcasting, “The Mediocre Show” grew from a thirty minute recording of two guys giving each other shit into a community-driven podcast with a global audience. Aside from its longevity and popularity, one of its strangest achievements is that the listenership has shifted toward Zion over the past two years, making Utah its top downloaded location. … read more

Boris @ Urban Lounge

Boris @ Urban Lounge
By

Being a patron of live shows in Salt Lake City I have an almost second-home relationship with the Urban Lounge. I have mindlessly studied the exposed rafter ceiling, particle board decor, patronized the comfy benches and even ventured into the privacy-be-damned bathrooms more times than I care to remember. But on Tuesday Boris turned the Urban Lounge into a wholly new and strange environment to which I had no relationship or history with. … read more

Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival @ Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA

Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival @ Golden Gate Park,...
By

The third annual Outside Lands, held in the Polo Field and Speedway Meadows in Golden Gate Park, featured an extremely slimmed down lineup than the previous years. Without the big names from 2008 and 2009, the festival was much smaller, and many people in the community were disappointed with the “biggest” headliner, Kings of Leon. I read an article in SF Weekly prior to the event that began, “Kings of Leon…really?”  … read more

Deftones @ The Rail

Deftones @ The Rail

Back in 1997 when I was just a young awkward unstable junior high kid who had just entered 8th grade, I remember staying up late one Sunday night to watch 120 Minutes on MTV. Deftones’ video for “Be Quiet and Drive” came on I was completely mesmerized by the beauty and brutality of that song. 13 years later I am still obsessed with the band because of their ability to grow and evolve with every album. … read more

Napalm Flesh: One Metal Weekend

Napalm Flesh: One Metal Weekend
By

The weekend of Aug. 20-22 was one filled with metal, as I visited Club Vegas on Friday, the 20th to see Exodus’ March of Brutality tour, and then witnessed the Pentagrammaton tour featuring Enthroned and Destroyer 666 on Sunday at Bar Deluxe. Hopefully some of you metal fiends were at one of these shows at least. If not, you sorely missed some metal madness and mayhem. … read more

Revved Up: 2010 Powder Mountain Motocross- August 19-22
By

The mellow vibe, scenic landscape, and impending storm combined to make this year’s Powder Mountain Motocross one to remember. The four days of racing began on a rain soaked Thursday and treated the competitors to a mud-fest that tested the skills of even the craftiest riders. … read more

Railway Banditas vs. Bomber Babes 08.28

Railway Banditas vs. Bomber Babes 08.28
By

The second bout of the Junction City Roller Dolls vs. Salt City Derby Girls double-header was between the Railway Banditas (JCRD) vs. Bomber Babes (SCDG). The Banditas instantly applied the pressure during the first jam with Colonel Skirts (#111) having a 20 point scoring run. The Babes scored zero. Sadly the Babes struggled throughout the whole game with scoring.  Railway Banditas made breaking out of the pack look easy, but Bomber Babes struggled with being the first ones out of the pack and gaining lead jammer status. … read more

Hilltop Aces vs. Sisters of No Mercy 08.28

Hilltop Aces vs. Sisters of No Mercy 08.28
By

This bout started off a little slow and tedious. The refs didn’t seem like they knew what they were doing and because of this there was a lot of down time between jams. It took awhile for the girls to get into a groove and both teams slowly scored points during the beginning of the first half. The Sisters controlled this part of the game. By the end of the tenth jam they were ahead by 22.  … read more

Napalm Flesh: Valdur – Vicious Existence

Napalm Flesh: Valdur – Vicious Existence
By

This week’s blog features an interview with Northern California’s Valdur, who released their second full-length album, Raven God Amongst Us, this week. The new album is eight tracks of tumultuous black metal, or, as Sxuperion sees the band, extreme metal—he doesn’t want to be lumped into the corpse-painted, spike-clad black metal scene. Also included are blog-exclusive and blog-related CD reviews. … read more

Primus @ The Rail

Primus @ The Rail
By

Going into this show I had no idea what to expect. I’d already seen Primus at the Snocore Music Tour in 1998 and they put on a great show with a random line up of punk, ska, and reggae bands. Several years later they’re wrapping up a their tour with another random group whipping the ass of the mainstream scene, Gogol Bordello. Both bands seem to be composed of crazy people and attract crazy fans. … read more
