Dead But Dreaming – Local Artist Spotlight: Arsenic Addiction
Cthulhu fhtagn, beautiful star-spawns! Dead But Dreaming is glad to have you on this rainy spring day as we have a spot of tea (and brutality) with local spotlight artists Arsenic Addiction! And as always I’ve got some a rundown of this week’s metal events and some web-exclusive reviews for you, this week from Arsonists Get All the Girls, Forgotten Tombs, Gates of Slumber, Jesuit, Polkadot Cadaver and Zombi. … read more
Mogwai @ Avalon 05.03
Glasgow’s Mogwai were plagued by visa and family issues before they were even able to kick this tour off, so the fact that they were able to pull this show off deserves a round of applause. Now, in case you’ve never seen them—or heard them, for that matter—Mogwai play a blistering mish-mash of rock, shoegaze, metal, indie, and trance-inducing drone. … read more
A-Trak @ Complex 05.10
Alain Macklovich a.k.a. A-Trak has been a busy man. One month ago, he left Coachella after playing a wild set with Duck Sauce mate Armand Van Helden and met up with Kid Sister and the Gaslamp Killer to kick off the Magic 8 Ball Tour. Serving partially as a pretext for A-Trak’s most current stage design, the tour spanned south from coast to coast twice, ending up in Salt Lake City last Tuesday. … read more
Dredg @ Avalon 05.10
A touring bill featuring this lineup likely would’ve been an impressive show, had the bumbling Avalon not fucked up yet another sweet setup with poorly trained and incompetent staff. The night ended with no encore and a sluggish herding to the parking lot, as well as a reminder that Salt Lake City’s inability to properly showcase medium-size acts is a true blight on its musical reputation. … read more
Trickonometry Film Premiere
On a sunny Saturday afternoon on the north side of Salt Lake, I pulled up to the Skate 4 Homies warehouse to the sight of more than 30 kids playing games of S-K-A-T-E and waiting for the doors to open for the premier of Technique skate shop’s 2011 skate film, Trickonometry. … read more
Here We Go Magic @ Urban Lounge 05.04
Having recently reviewed Here We Go Magic’s proggy The January EP, I went into this show wondering a couple things: would they be able to reproduce the EP’s intricacies live, and more importantly, would it be any fun? The show ended up surprising me pleasantly, making my original concerns irrelevant. … read more
Napalm Flesh: Dornenreich – Interview with Eviga
This week we have an interview with Eviga, who handles the bass, vocal and guitar duties for Austria’s all killer-no-filler Dornenreich. We also have a rundown of this week’s metal shows, links to new music from Boris, Enslaved and more, and a few blog exclusive reviews. If you read all the way to the end you get a special surprise of awfulness! … read more
No Joy @ Kilby Court 05.11
On one of the few warm days of early spring, I found myself sitting on a flat, forgotten tire behind the legendary Salt Lake all-ages venue, Kilby Court. I was enjoying a tall boy in anticipation of a show I had long been waiting to see. No Joy is a Canadian band on the Mexican Summer record label. … read more
The Meatmen @ Burt’s 04.05
It was freezing. Why I had elected to ride my bike down to Burt’s Tiki Lounge for The Meatmen show was beyond me, but I didn’t have time to think about it—only time to get inside and order an overpriced beer. I didn’t really know what to expect. At the very least, I hoped it would be good. … read more
Pet Shop Boys: Together, Battleship Potemkin & Concrete reviews
As troubling as I find the dying out of US physical CD singles, this is actually not the first release that the Pet Shop Boys have experimented with in the digital format—the singles from their last album were only available digitally in the US. I won’t lament too much on this, as the web has brought availability and accessibility to us all—especially since I procured the singles as a standard British CD single set last November, as I’m sure many US fans did. … read more
Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience @ The Depot 05.21
I wasn’t sure what to think. If it’s an “experience,” doesn’t that usually mean that it’s a cover band? Well, this experience is led by Jason Bonham, the son of the late John Bonham, the actual drummer from Led Zeppelin. So is he cashing in on his dad’s cred? … read more
Dark Dark Dark @ Kilby Court 04.18
I’m at Kilby Court where and I can hardly contain my excitement for seeing Dark Dark Dark again. This time, I’m significantly less inebriated than the last time they came, so I could actually remember the set, because this band is awesome. As more time elapses, I can feel myself getting more anxious to see them play. … read more
