Appleseed Cast, Kathryn Calder, Hospital Ships @ Urban 11.09
The five-piece Kansas outfit known as Appleseed Cast came back to Utah to grace us with their presence for the second time this year on November 8. Instead of playing to an all-ages assortment at Kilby Court, they sought refuge from the impending frigid weather with a loose crowd of twenty-somethings at Urban Lounge. … read more
Gardens, Max Pain and the Groovies, Dark Seas @ The...
Setting a steady, driving beat for the rocked-out audience, Gardens taps into something classic about rock and roll that doesn’t need intensity or psychedelic fuzz to communicate itself. … read more

Mates of State @ Urban 11.12
I don’t feel like I can say this very often, but this was the best show I have been to in a long time—there were no parts for which I would have rather been somewhere else. I walked in, took one look at the stage, and knew that it was going to be a good time. The whole wall behind the stage was filled with different colored flowers and there were clouds made of cotton hanging from the ceiling. … read more

The Opiates- Hollywood Under The Knife & Rainy Days and...
A long time in the making, the Opiates full-length debut, Hollywood Under The Knife, was worth every single second of wait time. With a world-weary truth—the album’s mostly female protagonists emerge song by song with their faults and weaknesses laid bare for the listener. As the album works its magic and emblazons itself upon the listener’s brain, this ultra-sophisticated concept album triumphs as one of this year’s finest releases. … read more

Happy New World Invasion Day to you, darkhearts! (Or if you insist on being traditional, Happy Thanksgiving.) Priory @ Kilby Court 11.21
You gotta hand it to these hipsters. And when I say hipsters, I mean the Portland dwelling, bearded, easy-going, most likely stoned kind. Yes, Priory fits said cliche, but let’s not be too hasty to judge. The dudes of Priory stood out enough amongst the masses to land a tour, hop in a bus and live the musician’s dream. … read more
The Copper Onion: Dinner at a Friend’s House
If I had to eat out every day, and could only pick one place in town to eat at, it would be The Copper Onion. The Copper Onion’s food flies against the wind of contemporary dining—it is simple, serious and from scratch. While one could complain that it is almost sentimentally traditional—think homemade fruit cream pies and hand-minced meat loaf—it’s tradition from a time passed and a place gone. I feel less like I am in a restaurant, and more that I am at a friend’s house, and they really know how to cook the hell out of cooking. … read more
Welcome to the Kennedoll House
Thanksgiving is a day I look forward to. I love to cook, and this is the perfect day to show off my culinary talents. I don’t know what it is about this day that turns this night-clubbing diva into a sentimental ‘50s housewife, but I go all out with the formal place settings and a menu that spans the board from the vegan to the pot eater, and ends in an open house cocktail party. … read more
