Submarines @ Urban Lounge
I attended the Submarines show at Urban Lounge Friday, April 15. I was shocked, as when the band started playing at 9:30 (early for Urban Lounge), there was only a group of about 30-40 people gathered. This ended up being a blessing, as the feel of the concert was one of smooth and pure enjoyment instead of the usual crazed mob mentality you usually get at Urban. Nik Freitas, who was traveling with the band, played the pre-show with an acoustic solo, and the Submarines came on after and killed it with a great live performance.

Redbull Schlittentag @ Canyons Resort
On the 2nd of April, I attended and photographed the Redbull Shlittentag, homemade sled building/ sled race competition at Canyons Resort in Park City, UT.
Schlittentag is the German word for “sledding day”. Put simply, it translates as “daredevils willing to propel themselves down a snow-covered hill and over a jump on a sled they built themselves”. The name of the game was the fastest, coolest and most stylish sled to hit the bottom first with the hugest air would take home to win. The theme of the afternoon was inibriation and a serious show of stupidity or bravery, it was hard to tell.

Phoenix Rising @ McGrew Studio 04.15.11
“Phoenix Rising” was the opening for artist Timm Paxton at McGrew Studio. The aptly named show was an exhibit of Timm’s work across multiple mediums, and a steady stream of gallery strollers kept the studio packed most of the evening. Timm is a gifted artist and a genuinely decent person, it was a pleasure to have met him.

Red Bull Minors Cup 04.02.11 @ Brighton Resort
Twenty young riders pushed their limits on the peak above the Millicent Lift in Brighton. Hand picked by industry pros, there was no shortage of big tricks. Throwing themselves down cliffs and steep, rocky chutes, there were no dull moments apart from the time it took for them to hike back up the peak for a second run, giving us all plenty of time to enjoy the plethora of Red Bull beverages. They were judged on difficulty, fluidity, innovation of tricks and time.

King of the Hipsters
Friday, March 18th, I found myself in Plum alley surrounded by Fixies. If you dont know what a Fixie is, its a fixed gear bicycle where the turn crank is attached by chain to the back wheel, and this is the preferred form of transportation for the “hipster” of this day and age, although not all the riders rocked Fixies. The event King of The Hipsters is an annual happening where bikers pay to compete for prizes as well as street cred. The game is simple, ride around Salt Lake City collecting bits of information and the first one to the finish line is crowned king. The only rule, there are no rules.
