Problem Daughter’s 5th Birthday Party! @ The Shred Shed 03.15...
This band had been together for five years—that’s pretty impressive for a local band. They have made some incredible music and developed a very dedicated fan base and have kept it going for that long. I took a second to really appreciate that I am here supporting these guys, because I know they are thinking the same about us. … read more

Real Estate @ Urban Lounge 03.08 with The Shilohs
Atlas has been described as their most mature album. In the past they’ve been described as the soundtrack to summer, but now they might be the soundtrack to the first day back from school after summer, when reality came crashing back and all the memories of summer fade, all the people you met and friends you made return to their realities. It’s still pretty chill though.
Book on Tape Worm @ Velour 03.07 with Flannel Graph
Friday night’s Book on Tape Worm show at Velour, an occasion to mark the group’s reissue of their sold out 2012 album, All the World’s a Stage, spotlighted one of Provo’s very best in this area: the band’s frontman, Scott Shepard. Surrounded by a hundred or so friends, family and fans, with a more intimate set up for the venue, and backed by the hauntingly beautiful music coming from his band, Shepard was in his element and it showed. … read more
Review: The Men – Tomorrow’s Hits
It seems that The Men have been moving away from their aggressive roots in favor of piano riffs, harmonicas, and slow, steady guitar solos. It is a step forward. … read more

Cash’d Out @ The State Room 02.21
Douglas Benson’s vocals are so spot-on that if you closed your eyes you could be transported to a Cash live show circa 1962. Songs like “Boy Named Sue,” “Walk the Line” and even the folk tale epic “The Ballad of John Henry” were all done with attention to detail in such a way that these guys weren’t just playing Cash songs, they were playing Cash songs the way Cash and his band played them … read more
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. @ The State Room 03.07 with...
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. snuck onstage, and the audience barely had a chance to clap. It seemed almost intentional as they quickly went into songs, almost like they wanted to catch the audience off guard. The audience battled back though, and 30 of Salt Lake’s finest rhythm specialists took to the floor. Jr. Jr. bopped and jumped and Salt Lake City shook and waved. … read more
God Module @ Area 51 03.06 with The Witch Was...
The members of Mordacious joined a horrifying, hooded man in a mask that looked as if his face was falling off. The room began to fill with tiny lights from phones and many tried to capture the evil that was taking place onstage. The mask was removed, revealing God Module front man Jaysn Bangert exposing his even more devious facial expressions. At that moment it became obvious who had brought the larger-than-average turnout. … read more
The Chords are Crushing, a Relapse to Nothing
On March 4, a band called Nothing released Guilty of Everything on Relapse Records. In passing, mention of the label renders associations with brutal extreme metal, but by and large, Nothing are a shoegaze band whose sole sonic metal credentials are, arguably, the sludgy characteristics of some of their riffs on Guilty of Everything. Other than that, frontman Dominic “Nicky” Palermo’s soft, whispery vocals float like clouds over celestially intoned guitar chord progressions and even-keeled beats. “I don’t think it fits at all,” says Palermo. He maintains, however, that, “it doesn’t matter these days.” … read more
Local Review: Tom Bennett – The Man Who Shook the...
From start to finish, the most powerful word I’ve found to describe Devil’s Hounds is “honest.” The beginning of this album focuses specifically on one man’s experience of, possibly, his favorite place on earth: Salt Lake City. … read more
