Localized – Chainwhip, Handicapitalist and Stark Raving Mad
Saturday, April 14, come get your face electrocuted with wide-ranging, pumping punk from Stark Raving Mad and irreverent ’80s hardcore from Handicapitalist at Urban Lounge. Chainwhip will melt the skin off of your face as they open the show with their screechy hardcore crust. Five bucks, punk as fuck, 21-plus for blood n’ pus. … read more
Blitzen Trapper and The Parson Red Heads @ The State...
Americana ensembles The Parson Red Heads and Blitzen Trapper visited Salt Lake City on March 22 for a sold out show at the State Room. When I got to the State Room, I noticed that I, as a beard grower and flannel shirt wearer, was contributing to the majority. The average age of the attendees confirmed my conviction that Americana is for old people, and by “old,” I mean early to mid-thirties. You know, old people. … read more

A Therapy Session with Eligh
A few days before the show on March 24 at Urban Lounge, I got a chance to sit down with Eligh over the phone to chat about the album, his first solo headlining tour with Amp Live and his long standing relationship with hip hop. … read more
The Dunwells @ Kilby 03.25
For whatever reason, there was a very small turnout to see The Dunwells, a five-piece group from Leeds, England. The handful of people who did show up for the show, however, witnessed some of the finest harmonies to bounce off the cheap, makeshift walls of Kilby Court in a long time. … read more
Napalm Flesh: Iron Maiden “En Vivo” DVD Review
Bang for your buck is definitely what Iron Maiden’s latest DVD release is all about—the production value of the entire package is top notch. An added bonus is its price—even for the Blu-Ray version, depending on where you purchase, it is about the cost of buying a new CD. En Vivo ultimately feels like a great follow-up to the amazing 2009 DVD documentary and live compilation that was Iron Maiden’s Flight 666. … read more
White Rabbits with Gull @ Urban Lounge 03.20
One thing I’ve learned about going to shows at the Urban Lounge is not to show up too early. The doors usually open around 9 p.m., but the music doesn’t start till somewhere around 10 p.m. If you’re not careful, you can easily down several drinks before the music even starts, just because you feel the need to do something besides standing around and glaring at the band’s equipment on stage. So I was pretty surprised when I opened the club’s door about ten minutes before 10 p.m. to find the place sparsely littered with only 30 or 40 people. … read more
Napalm Flesh: Fester Interview
Spring is, well, springing this week, but don’t let the sun and bright colors fool you—things are still as black as ever. This week, Napalm Flesh has an interview with Bjorn “Tiger” Mathisen of the recently reunited Fester, a black/death metal band from the early ’90s Norwegian scene. Also we have our usual lowdown on the week’s concert events as well as reviews of the new Borknagar, Power Trip and Revel in Flesh. … read more
Cappadonna @ Bar Deluxe 03.10
Saturday, March 10 got weird in almost all the right ways. QuitXpectingFavors threw the party and no one was tardy. Bar Deluxe was the hip hop hot spot for SLC. It was one of the first nice nights of the summer party season, and it was right after the big full moon—things were sure to get wild. … read more
A Plea for Purging @ Foursquare Church 03.14
Alright cyber warriors, I’ll try to contain this behemoth of a show review—not because I’m lazy, but because I know you’ve got a solid-booked day of scoring Craigslist dates and pirating music, and this show featured no fewer than thirty six bands (OK, so like…seven) on the bill. It was a lot to take in—My brain may have been running on some frazzled fumes, and I’m not discounting the occasional hunger hallucination. … read more

White Rabbits lead singer Stephen Patterson interview 03.09
Chances are you have heard the Brooklyn-based band, White Rabbits, before, and you just didn’t realize it. The band’s hit song, “Percussion Gun,” from their 2009 sophomore album, It’s Frightening, was everywhere on the Internet, as well as TV. Earlier this month, the band released their third album, Milk Famous, and made an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman. In a recent interview with SLUG, the band’s lead singer, Stephen Patterson, talked about the new album, touring and South by Southwest. … read more
