What the hell is an Ultra Lounge? Why would someone wait in line for 2 hours in the freezing cold for the chance to party with Pauly Shore? Honestly I don’t know, yet there I was again, carrying another 20 pounds of prominently branded crackers, jackets, lotions, sunglasses, headphones, body spray, water bottles, flash drives and chapstick. … read more

30 Days in the Valley: A Snowboard Odyssey

30 Days in the Valley: A Snowboard Odyssey

Over the last month Utah was been the hot spot for events especially those of the snow persuasion. Not only did we have the Winter Dew Tour rolling through for the first time ever, we also held the final Grand Prix of Snowboarding contest to determine who would be heading to Vancouver to respect Team America (fuck yeah!), played host to the X-Dance film festival for it’s 10th anniversary and also received about 8 ft. of snow in a week making for some last minute photo shoots and epic riding conditions in an otherwise lack luster early season. Fortunately (and unfortunately) I was there to observe it all for you! … read more

The Northface Masters 2010: Stop 1

The Northface Masters 2010: Stop 1
By

After two long days of suspension due to crappy weather, the 3rd annual Northface Masters kicked off on a beautiful morning on Monday, January 25.  If you’ve never heard of it, the North Face Masters is one of the first big-mountain snowboarding competition tours meant to help bring back what some riders feel is the root of snowboarding, riding deep pow and hucking yourself off cliffs.  The Masters fills a huge competition gap in snowboarding, with less than a handful of other big-mountain competitions in the United States today.

P.O.S. @ The Urban Lounge

P.O.S. @ The Urban Lounge

I’m at the Urban Lounge early, drink in hand, waiting for the music to get started. At the smaller venues, it’s worth my time to show up this prematurely to maybe catch a glimpse of the performers while they aren’t all done up in PR mode. I don’t know why I do it—perhaps to feel included, perhaps just to reassure myself these artists who have provided essential soundtracks for my daily life are, in fact, real people. … read more

For pretty much as long as I can remember I’ve had a deeply rooted opposition to and disgust for mustaches. I guess it’s an unfair generalization, but from a young age I observed that the only people who had ‘staches were cops, weasel-faced Nazis, and guys who used one hand to turn up their Hank Jr. tape while using the other to polish the fender of their four wheeler after a holiday weekend at the sand dunes. A few years ago a new breed of mustache-wearer became far more prominent in the mostly still stagnant facial hair scene: the sarcastic hipster … read more

Daniel Day Trio @ The Red Door

Daniel Day Trio @ The Red Door

It was a freezing cold Saturday night.  As we walked down 2nd south to the Red Door my step-brother and I discussed our lovable local government.  I’m halfway through the phrase “Glenn Beck-loving sons of…” when our conversation is abruptly halted.  There’s a wait to get inside. A line at a local CD release show?  Once we got inside, the guy at the door said “find a spot, wherever you can.” The place was packed.

The past two months have been bursting with award shows, but the two biggest polar opposite events, the Razzie Awards (March 6th) & the Academy Awards (March 7th) have yet to commence. Here are the nominees (and winners) as foretold to me in my dream by Pee-wee’s Playhouse’s Jambi the Genie. Mekka Lekka Hi Mekka Hiney Ho bitches! … read more

Thirty Two Day at Brighton 03.02.10

As I’m chilling at the top of the banked slalom course that the Brighton Park Crew built for ThirtyTwo Day, waiting my turn to drop, I realize I’m standing amongst some of Salt Lake’s finest amateur shredders. I immediately start thinking, “I’m totally fucked…” … read more

Plan-B Theatre: Wallace

Plan-B Theatre: Wallace
By

Wallace is the story of two men whose lives run aground in Salt Lake: Wallace Thurman, a young, gay, African-American writer and Wallace Stegner, the Pulitzer-prize winning writer who survived the brutal plains of Saskatchewan. In life their paths never crossed, in the minimalist set in the Plan-B theater they only once acknowledge each other, but their lives, at some point, share a city, a passion for writing, and a name: Wallace. … read more

The Creepshow @ Burt’s Tiki Lounge

The Creepshow @ Burt’s Tiki Lounge
By

I arrived at the dark dank spot on State Street known as Burt’s Tiki Lounge early to make sure I got a good spot that offered a choice line of sight of the so called stage. The normal crowd of gutter punks were perched at the bar nursing their hang over from the weekend. Having an ultra, mega, schoolyard crush on the Creepshow lead singer Sara “Sin” Blackwood, I couldn’t wait to see her hit that stage.

Miyazaki Mayhem!

Miyazaki Mayhem!
By

As soon as Walt Disney cryogenically froze himself beneath Cinderella’s Castle inside Disneyland’s Magic Kingdom theme park in 1966, the world of animation lacked a leader capable of shattering the limits of children’s fantasies. On the other side of the globe, in Tokyo, Japan, a young animator by the name of Hayao Miyazaki was already creating a social stir with his never-ending creativeness with conceptual drawings and story ideas.
