Review: Espectrostatic – Self-Titled

Posted on December 4, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Garage rock impresario Alex Cuervo (Hex Dispensers, Feast of Snakes) has faithfully captured the intensity and driving repetition of classic horror movie soundtracks on his newest synth project, Espectrostatic. … read more

Review: Eternal North – Children Ov the Cold

Posted on December 4, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

This Idahoan group makes me ponder the possibilities if In Flames and Children of Bodom hadn’t “moderned up” their sound. It kind of makes a guy feel like it’s the early ’90s and so many Scandinavian groups hadn’t become shadows of themselves. … read more

Review: Ensemble Economique – Interval Signals

Posted on December 31, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Interval Signals, one of two recordings from Brian Pyle’s Ensemble Economique solo project released in December, is a 40-minute pastiche of field recordings, radio sounds, and as the album’s title implies—interval signals. … read more

Review: Ensemble Economique – Light That Comes, Light That Goes

Posted on December 31, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

My first thought upon hearing the familiar “if you need help, please hang up and try again…” recording in Light That Comes, Light That Goes’ opening track, “If You Need Help,” was that it may be a bit too ubiquitous of a sample to be effective in another context. … read more

Review: Eraas – Initiation

Posted on December 31, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Initiation, Eraas’ second full-length album full of trip hop beats, kraut rock tempos and ethereal vocal samples, is remarkably hermetic and cohesive. Like Chelsea Wolfe, Eraas infuse their vocals with haunting echoes to create a kind of ominous atmosphere, especially on the sinister tracks such as “Old Magic” and “Above.”  … read more

Review: Evan Ønly – No Matter What EP

Posted on December 31, 2013 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

In his debut solo EP, Evan Brody takes an old sound and makes it new again. Most of No Matter What could easily be mistaken for classic ’80s music, which, as far as this writer is concerned, the world needs more of. … read more

Review: Empire Before All – Destruction

Posted on February 6, 2014 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Their style harkens back to the golden days of metalcore, albeit a little more on the thick end, grabbing influence from the generation bands like Emmure and The Dead Lay Waiting. The melody, the rage, the swampy breakdown, and the smart licks all add up to an addictive listen.  … read more

Review: Enabler – Flies EP

Posted on February 6, 2014 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Flies contains all the atmospheric weight, nuance and rage of a full-on heavy metal epic, manhandled into six cohesive cuts. The discordant strains of genre definers From Ashes Rise lie in the off-kilter melodies of “Shift” and “Flies,” but the band hits their stride when they slow the gallop and strut their thunderous grooves. … read more

Review: Empty Flowers – The Air You Found

Posted on March 6, 2014 (August 31, 2022) by Asha Pruitt
Empty Flowers - The Air You Found album artwork

It is not often that I hear traditional rock mixed with ambient electronic themes and can say I enjoy it. Empty Flowers showed me that the two can be beautifully united into an ocean of imagery.  … read more

Review: Epic Problem – Lines

Posted on March 6, 2014 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Hailing from Derbyshire, England, this four-piece band (who take their name from a Minor Threat song) is one of the few worth listening to in modern street punk. I knew almost immediately I was going to like this album in the first 30 seconds of the opening track, “Lines.”  … read more

Review: Enthroned – Sovereigns

Posted on June 4, 2014 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Sit back, throw away your goddamned Deafheaven and Liturgy albums, and embrace the true progression of black metal.  … read more

Review: Emperors Of Wyoming – Self-Titled

Posted on July 1, 2014 (January 24, 2022) by Asha Pruitt

Emperors of Wyoming Self-Titled Liaison Music Street: 03.25 EOW = Tom Petty + The Byrds + George Jones This is an interesting record. It is essentially a re-release of a record that came out in Europe a few years back. The American version adds a few more songs and remixes everything. People are paying attention
